So, fooling around with units and making battles and whatnot, I came to a realization: archers are near useless in battle and are unreliable bodyguards! The only advantage you would have with archers is if your forces have the high ground, or the enemy has many obstacles to go around. At the moment, they are innefective and you might as well go all melee with your forces. Here are the ideas I have to make archers worth your money.
Increase range: the range of all archers should ve doubled. The reason why is, it really irks me that when an archer sees an enemy, they walk towards it before shooting. Why?! You have a bow! Stay back! Also making or reenacting sieges are impossible because the archers can never shoot from the walls! What is a siege without archers shooting down from the ramparts? It's so frustrating! Sometimes, an archer can look straight into the direction of an enemy from his tower or wall, but dosent shoot! It's silly and it makes no sense. The main function of archers is to dwindle and weaken the enemy forces before the melee fighting begins. That means, they need range! It would add a bit more strategy to the game and pressure players more into charging if there are archers harassing his large army.
Arrow storm mode: in large battles or when fighting in large numbers, archers become inmefective. This is because of all the melee units and other archer units in the way. For this tactical issue, i have come up with a solution: arrow storm mode. Think about those movies like 300, when the persian army shot arrows into the air and they landed on the spartans. When an archer senses that if it shot forward, the arrow would hit an ally, the archer would aim up, calculate the arch of his shot so it would hit his target, and shoot up over the front line, into the enemy. This would make "holding the line" and protecting archers more important.
Conclusion: With theses editions, i believe it would add a more tactical feeling to battles, make players more weary of enemy archers, and encourage players to buy archers. It will give archers a more important role in battle and defense, making it worthwhile to send archers to the walls of your fort or castle. Last, but not least, they would be more reliable when it comes to protecting you.
