First of all, when there is an invasion on a fortress the invading army should be able to break the gate down with axes, or war hammers (or battering rams which would extra damage to gates...when they are added). The attacking troops would attack the gate just like zombies do to doors. Each gate would have health different amounts of health depending on material.
This would improve the game because I've noticed that all invading troops just pile up outside the walls and get picked off by archers.
The health of the gate may be low, but that's when my second idea comes in...
Imagine this, enemy troops are charging towards your fortress and you know that they will break down the gate in no time, what shall you do...? You pull out a reinforcement and place it to protect the gate. BOOM! The gate now has extra health giving you a few more precious seconds...
Also the reinforcement would lock the gate so it can't be opened by other players (on servers)
, and let the army in...
Wooden = an extra 40 health (❤️ x 40)
Bronze = an extra 55 health (❤️ x 55)
faction specific, iron (built on their crafting table) = an extra 75 health (❤️ x 75)
mithril = an extra 100 health (❤️ x 100)
Each race could have a special baracads from their crafting table ...
Each reinforcement would also lock the door so other player (on a server) couldn't just open the door and leat them in.

I think that the different gates should have different amounts of health...
All wooden/hobbit gates = 140 health (❤️ x 140)
All /silver/gold gates = 175 health (❤️ x 175)
All iron/bronze gates = 210 health (❤️ x 210)
Fatcion specific gates = 280 health (❤️ x 280)
All mithril gates = 350 health (❤️ x 350)
