For some time, I have been trying to find an answer to this question. In the Hobbit, the Company crosses through most of the Wood-elves' lands south of Thranduil's Halls. However, they never spot any form of tall structure. Some might argue that the trees would have blocked their sight of them, but I don't think they wouldn't notice a large stone tower sticking out. Especially with how low and spread out the trees are in the Mod (but since that has already been suggested, I will not mention it here).

Moreover, both the Silvan Elves (which form the majority of the Woodland Realm's population) and the Sindar (the nobility from old Doriath) are never mentioned as great builders. Building towers was more of a Ñoldorin (and possibly Vanyarin, I'm not sure) thing, and I sincerely doubt any Ñoldor joined Oropher on his journey to the Great Forest. And even if they did, what is the use for building towers when the trees are sometimes taller and already there?

Solution to the Captain:

Some people might ask where they would be able to hire Wood-elves then. That is why I also suggest a new structure: The wood-elven treehouse.

Essentially a Wood-elven version of Lothlorién's Grand Elven Treehouse, but smaller and with an more earthy feel, if that makes sense. (the design is NOT final: I am not a very skilled builder, and I gladly welcome any modifications.)
