Leads don't work, minecarts are probably best although it's not ideal.

Although I personally haven't tried this, I've heard many players punch the trader to get it to attack them. Then, as long as you stay far enough away from the trader, you can have it safely follow you to your destination. When you get it where you want it, let it kill you to reset it's target.

Minecarts work pretty well for shorter distances, but after a few thousand blocks the time and iron invested grows quite high and the above method would probably be cheaper and faster.
