In the following account, I present my proposition for two new neutral opposing factions:

What I am about to elaborate on here first is the connection to Tolkien's lore and the reason why I believe the two factions that I propose fits the lore. The first part of the connection involves Dirhaval, the character who wrote the in universe "Tale Of The Children Of Hurin" and "The Wanderings Of Hurin". We do not know anything about Dirhaval besides his writing and that he was killed during the third kinslaying. We only know that he wrote his writings because he felt that the history of Hurin and his children was nearest to his heart. While we know that this is why he was interested in the Narn, it does not explain why it was near to his heart. We also do not know the specific impact and influences that the Narn had in later ages, only that it was the greatest and likely was highly influential. The second part of the connection to the lore involves the fate of Hurin and the fact it is technically unknown what happened to him in the First Age. It is only said in "The Silmarillion" that he MIGHT have committed suicide, but it is not outright said. Though it is highly likely that he did so. Therefore, my theory takes that into account along with Hurin's mental state within "The Wanderings Of Hurin".

My interpretation is that Hurin discovered that due to his mental torture at the hands of Morgoth, and the revelation from Melian that everything he does benefits evil in some way, drove Hurin into a despairing madness and as a result, he commited suicide because he could not live with the knowledge that every action he did served no purpose beside benefiting evil. Now that is the lore that I was influenced by. Now, shifting attention back onto the in universe "Tale Of The Children Of Hurin," it is my theory that due to Dirhaval's work being said to be the greatest of all the tales of Beleriand, that future loremasters and writers (ie. Elrond, Bilbo, Findegil, etc.) would discuss, comment, reveiw and critique Dirhaval's work. The two factions that I am about to propose are not factions in the typical sense and more of two large "cults/organizations/guilds".

The background of these groups is that two philosophical traditions emerged from readers of the Narn: Hurinism and Umarthism. The thinkers of Hurinism are known as Hurinists/Hurinlings and the thinkers of Umarthism are known as Umarthists/Umarthans (ill-fated). The Hurinlings began with Dirhaval, believing that the tragic story of Hurin and his family is about how even the greatest heroes are not infallible and that even those who have fallen so far can still achieve great things (The Death of Glaurung) despite the pain they torture (The Wanderings Of Hurin) themselves with. The Hurinists believe that nobody (however far they have fallen) are beyond redemption. The largest dwelling of Hurinlings is mostly on Tol Morwen, Tol Fuin, Tol Himling, but they can be found anywhere as they have no ties to any land (though they once tried to maintain and preserve the Stone of the Hapless on Tol Morwen where Turin and Morwen are buried). Their largest settlement is called "New Dor-Lomin" located on the south eastern half of Tol Fuin.

The Umarthans of Umarthism began much later and they derive much of their philosophy from Hurin's final days when Melian revealed to him that everything he did was pointless only to benefit evil. They believe that free will is an illusion and that every living thing is ill-fated in that life has no meaning so way bother resisting evil? They reinforce their belief with the speculative idea of the Dagor Dagorath and Arda Unmarred. With this, they believe that their only purpose would be in preparing Arda for the Dagor Dagorath in order for Turin to avenge Hurin and for life to become meaningful in Arda Unmarred. The Umarthans and Hurinlings both despise and look down on each other, with the Hurinlings trying to redeem the Umarthans and the Umarthans trying to eradicate the Hurinlings. This resulted in the Hurinlings being driven from all three islands with only "New Dor-Lomin" still within their control. The Hurinlings eventually began to call the land of the Umarthans the "Nan Dumgorthin", which translates to the "Land of the Dark Idols" due to the Umarthans habit of building elaborate idols of scenes from Dirhaval's Narn that reflect their philosophy, as well as idols to the Dagor Dagorath and the speculative confrontation between Turin and Morgoth.

Fellowship Tweaks

I've been running a LOTR server for about 7 years now. I love the mod. I have some ideas/grips about fellowship. This is all meant to be constructive.

Index FT = Fast Travel

Number of fellowships: I don't like that you can be in 50+ fellowships. It makes no sense.

Suggestion #1. Make a server setting to limit the number of fellowships people can be in. Zero means no limit or input a number to make a limit. This will give servers/players a choice as to weather or not they want to set a limit. (Choice is good)

Clearing clutter: The map gets very cluttered with all of the FT points people share with their fellowships.

Suggestion #2. Make a way to choose what fellowship's FT points you see on the map. Some kind of toggle able feature so that people can, for example, turn off seeing FT points for Fellowship A but still see the points for Fellowship B or see all of them or whatever they want.

More Server options: Making it possible to use commands to put people in and out of fellowships.

Suggestion #3. On my server for example we made FT points for server builds and shared them with a fellowship called "Server". That way people can find them and go there easier. However for people to be added to it we need staff to invite every... single... member. With our traffic that is a lot of people. A way to just run a command to add someone and/or everyone without need of accepting an invitation would make that much easier. I have heard that we might be able to add FT points server side in the future but there are still ways that this proposed feature could still be handy.

Again this is meant to be constructive. I love the mod. It's a quality piece of work and I hope to see it continue living on.

Misty Mountains Improvement Thread

Preface As many of you know, the Misty Mountains (and other mountain ranges, a few of the suggestions here will apply to all major mountain ranges) were very large and very signifigant obstacles in Tolkien's universe. The danger of the Misty Mountains was so much that none in the Fellowship even considered going over them by any way other then one of the major passes, yet in the Mod, the mountains are laughably easy to traverse, and once you get past them once (which takes five minutes, because of the fast travel points on the other side of the misties), you can forever ignore these mountains for the rest of your playthrough for anything other then as a giant mithril mine. I believe this should not be the case, and I am sure many others agree. In this thread I will be proposing a number of suggestions to improve/fix the danger of the Misty Mountains. If you have an improvement you'd like in this thread, simply mention it in the replies and I'll put it on this suggestion and credit you. 

Line of sight Fast-Travel The first improvement I have came up with is a line of sight fast travel system, wherein when fast travelling, if there is a major mountain range in the way of the fast travel route, (misty mountains, blue mountains, white mountains, etc) you can only fast travel to the closest waypoint on your side of the mountain range. This would force people to take account large mountain ranges when travelling, and would make things all the more interesting. Also, you would not be able to fast travel to anywhere outside of the mountain range you are in while within a mountain range, which would force players to travel through mountain ranges instead of completely ignoring them. Of course, this would be configurable, so if you don't want this in your game/server you don't have to have it. 

Inclement weather In the most recent update of the mod, several forms of inclement weather were added. While these new weather features are very basic, they are a first step to making their respective regions feel more alive. Of course the type of weather I am talking about is blizzards! Blizzards would be a semi-rare weather phenomenea in the Misty Mountains, Grey Mountains, White Mountains, Forodwaith Mountains, Blue Mountains, and Red Mountains where heavy snowfall limits your vision to no more then 10-30 blocks infront of you, depending on the strength of the blizzard, which would be able to vary, with stronger blizzards being rarer of course. Not only would your vision be severely limited, but your walking speed will be cut from anywhere to 30-90%, depending on the strength of the blizzard, due to the high winds and fierce snowfall. But of course, low vision and decreased mobility isn't the only problem. When outside during blizzards, depending on the strength of the blizzard, your health could be reduced by as much as 5 to 10% of your health, every 5-20 seconds, again depending on the strength of the storm with a stronger storm taking away more of your health more commonly. Wargskin rugs would alieviate this threat, but would not completely eliminate it, only reducing the frost effect to being about as potent as the forodwaith forst effect, with half a heart or 5% of your health being lost every 20 seconds. The only way to completely get away from the effects of a blizzard would be to go underground or into a shelter of some kind (which has to have walls and a roof), or to wait out the storm. Again, blizzards could be configurable. 

Avalanches Here follows one of the most controversial sections of my suggestion - Avalanches. Currently, simply walking across the Misty Mountains and pillarling straight up and across mountains is very easy, laughably so. When walking across a snow block in the misty mountains, if the snow block is at least 30 vertical blocks over surrounding terrain which is within 50 blocks, and there is no barrier in the way which is more then 7 blocks high, then an avalanche can spawn on the block the player is on. Everytime a player moves across a block which can spawn an avalanche, there will be a 1/50 chance of an avalanche spawning. The avalanche will always start as a small amount of snow particles that quickly accelerate down the mountain, carrying the player with them. As the avalanche travels down the slope, its speed and size (both in width and height) increase. Once an avalanche is moving faster then 5 blocks per second, not only will it push a player, it will cause any player within it to suffocate while being pushed. However, if a player sneaks, the avalanche will push the player half as fast, and if a player sneaks and walks in the opposite direction of the avalanche, they will stay entirely still. When an avalanche finally stops, it will deposit a drift of snow on wherever it has stopped, the size of the drift depends of the size of the avalanche that produced it. The exact mechanism of how this works would have to be determined by the mod team, but regardless the snow drift would only last for 30 seconds after the avalanche before despawning, and would have a hard cap on its size to prevent excessive lag, plus mobs would not be able to spawn avalanches, to prevent excessive lag (again), but they would be able to pushed or suffocated by one. Of course, avalanches would have a chance of naturally generating too. While in the misty mountains during night, there will be a 1/500 chance of an avalanche naturally generating within an avalanche source block every 10 seconds within a 100 block range. During the day, this would raise to a 1/250 chance every 10 seconds, and after a snowstorm for a period of 5 minutes, the probability would double. After a blizzard for 5 minutes, the probability will at the very minimum triple, with a rare chance of quadrupling. While many people will opppose avalanches for making traversing the misties "too hard" they will in effect force people to cross the misty mountains through a mountain pass, which while rarely found in nature, will encourage people to use the high pass road through the misties instead of hunting for new routes through the misty mountains. Coming up is the final portion of my suggestion. 

Glacier Sub-biome One of the most beautiful and deadly aspects of a high, cold, and always snowy mountain range are glaciers. For this reason, I suggest a glacier sub-biome to be added to the misty mountains. Glaciers would spawn as long and somewhat narrow plains of ice between mountain ranges ranging from 20-40 blocks deep, under which would be stone, with a top layer of snow 1 block thick. Glaciers would also have long, narrow ravines called crevasses which would make traversing them very dangerous. There would also be a new block within glaciers known as "unstable snow" which would look exactly the same as normal snow, but would only spawn over crevasses (not all crevasses would be covered in unstable snow). The caveat of unstable snow is that upon a player stepping on it, it would have a 50% chance of breaking, unless they are sneaking, in which case you could safely travel across it. If you are not sneaking, you may be sent hurtling in the depths of the crevasses, which could be as much as 39 blocks deep and possibly filled with orcs (the bottom layer of glaciers will always be compressed ice). Finally, unstable snow "snow bridges" would respawn within 5 minutes of a player or mob walking on it, however unstable snow would not respawn if a player destroyed it. Unstable snow would act as normal snow if harvested. 

Conclusion and credits: So far, most of this suggestion was created by me (Based Pro#7627), with a tiny amount of outside help. If anybody else happens to help me with this suggestion in any way in the future, I may include them in the credits here if they wish.

More immersive fast travel

One that always kind of bothered me with the LOTR mod is how location in the game doesn't impact gameplay after a certain point of playtime. One could essentially travel from their personal base in the most southern tip of Harad to Mt. Gundabad in 10 seconds. There are different solutions (that vary in terms of difficulty or inconvenience) to this problem that I could think of, and while I think all of them would be amazing if they were to be implemented, they each bring their own issues with them. Solution 1: remove fast travel entirely This is probably the most hardcore of them all and would most likely work best on servers. Having to walk everywhere would give players the opportunity to peddle goods from one place to another, make regional goods more rare and give an interesting new perspective on politics and alliances. Someone who built a base in Forodwaith or the mountains of the Wind would live so far from the civil world that they would be forced to be isolationist. East and west would be more disconnected from each other, like they were in lore, as one has to travel a great distance to get to the other side. While I feel that this solution would deliver some interesting differences to trade and politics on servers, this solution would also drive away a lot of new players from the mod, as it would be a pain to walk or ride everywhere. It would also limit the organization of events and the like. It would definitely not work on some of the established servers, as many players travel across the world for all kinds of different things all the time. Solution 2: Fast travel limit My second solution would be to create a certain "fast travel limit". This would mean that fast travel is limited to a certain amount of neighbouring regions, using the areas that determine the unlocking of waypoint groups. For example: if one were to start in Belegost in the Blue Mountains with the fast travel limit being 1, they would only be able to travel to a waypoint in Lindon or Eriador, as those regions border the Blue Mountains. I think this would have the advantages of the first solution while keeping the overall time traveled still quite low. This would also mean that people who travel around a lot get lower cooldowns at the waypoints along the route, meaning they can travel across Middle-Earth faster. This would open up new concepts like marching time for armies, mapping out your route as to avoid enemy teritorry and having goods peddlers who take stuff from one end of the map to the other. This option could be disabled in the config, or edited to allow one to travel through multiple regions at once. Possible addition to Solution 2 In order to make the fast travel system even more immersive, the option could be added to only allow fast travel inside a certain range of a waypoint. As to make up for the fact that travelling through the wilderness takes longer than when travelling by road. Alternatively, a mechanic could be added that instead of 1 region ahead, when on the road one is able to travel an extra region further. I hope this gets implemented in some way or another. [Endorsed] Customisable minimum FT cooldown time

<h2>Proposal</h2> Next to the current maximum cooldown time on fast travel, customisable with /fastTravelCooldown <ticks>, I propose to add a minimum cooldown time that can be defined by server management. The rate at which the cooldown time reduces each time a waypoint is used, should not necessarily be adjusted, assuming it is a relative reduction of the difference between maximum and minimum time. It may be convenient to maximise the minimum value to half of the maximum set for a server. <h2>Reasoning</h2> The cooldown time varies between defined maximum time and one tenth of that time. If a server uses the default maximum of 30 minutes (36000 ticks), the minimum fast transport cooldown time is 3 minutes. When the maximum is set to several minutes, which is a very common practise on many servers in the community, that minimum is reduced to only a few tens of seconds. The latter aspect is considered a drawback, but often accepted as increasing the maximum time is considered a worse option. So, in practise, many servers use a relatively low value for the maximum cooldown time, and take the resulting minimum cooldown time for granted. From observation and conversation with people in the community I concluded it would be helpful to many servers if the minimum cooldown time could also be separately defined. This provides server management the possibility to both set an acceptable maximum cooldown time, while minimising waiting time and annoyance for players wanting to travel fast in the early stages of their server life, and an acceptable minimum cooldown time, resulting in reduced possible 'abuse' like for dastardly hit-and-run tactics.

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting so I hope I'm posting correctly. My suggestion is simple, and mostly explained in the title: Having three to five hotkeys which can be set to any custom or default fast travel point. Then when pressed in game, it would initiate fast travel without having to open the map. I think this would really improve convienience when fast travelling, as I often find myself zooming in and out around the map going to the same 4 places.

</nav><h2>Reasons and Motivation</h2> So I was thinking about the fast travel system, and it struck me that it seemed extremely unrealistic. So, I invented the roads system. <h2>Mechanics</h2> The system works like this: All roads are generated around "Road Blocks". Road blocks can be crafted on the default crafting table with three sand below three cobble or three stone bricks, and if you craft your own, you can build your own roads. Every road block has a "radius" similar to that of the bronze banner protection area. Whenever two blocks are within each other's radius, they form a "road". When inside the radius of any block in a "road", you can fast travel to any road block that is: 1) In a region you have unlocked and 2) In the same "road" as the block who's radius you are in. <h2>Using the system</h2> Traditional fast traveling will be removed in favor of this new system. Cooldowns will still apply. When fast traveling, you would open the map like usual. If you are standing on a road, all the sections of that road that are in regions you have access to will appear as a thick line on the map in a distinctive color(I was thinking yellow). You can then click on any section of the line and you will fast travel to the road block nearest to where you clicked. <h2>Custom Roads</h2> In addition, there will be faction-affiliated roads, which aren't generated naturally but are built by the player. That require three sand and three of the faction's brick. Like banners, they will protect the area they cover, and can be keyed to Fellowships, Alignment with the faction in question, or individual players. However, they will only protect the area if they are in a road, and in order to use them, players will still have to unlock the region they are in. Custom roads will have another option: the "Toll" option. In order to set up a toll road, a player first places a "foundation" block. Foundation blocks can only be accessed by the person who places them, and will store all the money collected in tolls. Every block in a chain with the "toll" block that was also placed by the toll road owner will be part of the "toll" road. Whenever a player enters a "toll" road, they will receive a popup that displays the amount of money demanded, the amount of access that money will give you(measured in how many times you will be allowed FT to a point on that road), and an accept button along with a deny button. The accept button will be unpressable unless you have enough money in your inventory to pay the toll. If you do have enough money and you accept, the money will be removed from your inventory and placed in the "foundation" block(Toll road idea suggested by WoodenBox ).

Waypoint Regions Locked

I came across a player on my server whose waypoint regions had all been locked. Going to those regions would not unlock them. I first tried to unlock them via the command (/lotrWaypoints). However that returned an error message:
PLAYERNAME already has the waypoint region SHIRE unlocked
I then asked for a screenshot to prove that it was really a problem and the waypoints weren't toggled off or something. The player in question is near the Edoras waypoint in the screenshot. You can also see that the player has two custom waypoints in Rohan. I then downloaded the LOTR player data to see if it was correct and everything looked fine to me, but I've uploaded it so you can check it for yourself. Finally, I fixed the issue by using the command (/lotrWaypoints) to lock and unlock all regions that were supposed to be unlocked as indicated by the player data file. The main reason I'm posting this is to see if others have had an issue like this and it is actually a bug, or if this is just a strange mishap.

I have a suggestion broken into three main parts, all toggleable by config options. All of them focus around more of a feel of localization on multiplayer servers. <hr>Local Chat <hr>Something that has, undoubtedly, been suggested many times before is local chat. I think that this could be good, if implemented properly. In my idea for it, there would be three different types of answers for the property in the config file. It would be set to 1 by default. 0, 1, or any number more than 10.
0 would leave chat as it is.
1 would make it be my unique form of local chat. It would first scan to see if there are any players within, say, 1500 blocks of you. If there are, it would send an invisible, incorporeal, projectile moving towards them at a speed of around 20 blocks/second. When it reached them, it would display your chat message. This would form a sense of isolation, as chat would take time, and you wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone farther than 1500 blocks, or with unloaded chunks between you and them.
Option 3, any number greater than 10, would just instantly display the message to any player within X blocks. There would be another configuration option for the local chat, and it would affect chatting with commands. It would be set to either 0, or 1. It would be set to 1 by default.
0 would make it so that any display of text caused by commands by another player not within the 1500 blocks, from 1 of the first config file, would not be displayed, unless you were a server operator.
1 would leave the commands as it currently is, so that you could communicate with other players using /me or /tell.
When a new player joins a server for the first time, they would have anywhere from 0 to 120 minutes where their chat could be heard by everyone, and they could hear everyone's chat. The exact value, 0-120, would be determined by a configuration property. <hr>Chunkloader Beacons <hr>Currently, beacons(of Gondor) have no use other than an aesthetics block, due to the fact that it is simpler and easier to just type in your message. If local chat was added, they could be used as a form of long-distance communication, like the beacons actually were used for. Except, due to the fact that they can only be lit if they are in a loaded chunk, they would require a few changes. I think that beacons should be changed to act as chunkloaders during their lighting. This would have 3 options for answers to its configuration setting. 0, 1, and 2. It would be set to 1 by default.
0 would make beacons function exactly as they do now, which means no chunkloading and no long-range communication.
1 would make beacons function as chunkloaders, for 2 chunks farther out than their maximum lighting range, for five seconds after their lighting and extinguishing, to enable them to activate other beacons within their lighting range that wouldn't necessarily be loaded by the player lighting it.
2 would make beacons function as a chunkloader from the time they are lit to five seconds after their extinguishing.
Additionally, minecarts with blocks(hoppers, furnaces, chests) in them would, if enabled by a seperate config property, act as a chunkloader with a radius of one chunk, to enable long-distance deliveries. <hr>Fast-travel Parties <hr>Right now, traveling in parties has no benefit besides safety, and can cause quite a few problems. More people to feed, more map-locations to turn off, more chance of being noticed by enemies, etc. I think that some form of fast travel parties would be beneficial. There would be 2 configuration options for this, 0 and 1. 0 would be off, 1 would be on. It would be on by default.
If players have an option in their Middle-Earth options menu enabled, disabled by default, they would be able to fast travel with any nearby player. Only the players following on the fast travel would need to have it enabled, allowing fast-travel hijacking and prevention, but the distance in which players have to be in to travel with a person is halved if the person has it off. When one player fast travels and nearby, within 50(or 25 if the leader has it disabled, also the value would be changeable in config) blocks, players have their parties setting enabled, they all would be given the message about fast traveling in 10 seconds, don't move, and if any one of them moved it would cancel it for everyone. The person initiating the fast-travel would be given a message similar to: "Recneps, Potato, and Urmum are joining your Fast Traveling." Recneps, Potato, and Urmum would be given a message saying "Joining 's Fast Traveling." They would all have to have a fast travel cooldown of zero. If the fast traveling went like normal, everyone would fast travel to the waypoint, but would all be given the fast travel cooldown of the player who actually initiated the fast traveling. This would allow for more of a travel-companion, tourguide, taxi-service, kind of occupation, as you could get players to their destinations much faster than they could, assuming you had practiced the route. <hr>Well, that is my suggestion. Local chat, chunkloader beacons, and fast-travel parties.
