Sam turned quickly. ‘And for you, Ferny,’ he said, ‘put your ugly face out of sight, or it will get hurt.’ With a sudden flick, quick as lightning, an apple left his hand and hit Bill square on the nose.

The Fellowship of the Ring

Apples are very common food items that may be found across most of Middle-earth growing on trees and stored in structures.

Middle-earth is home to two varieties of apple: the red, vanilla apple and the green, mod apple. Aside from colour, the only difference between the two is that red apples will make horses grow up faster while green apples will not. Be aware that the two varieties are not interchangable in trading and mini-quests.

Obtaining[]

Apples can be obtained by breaking apple tree leaves, which spawn in most biomes across north-western Middle-earth; apples cannot be obtained from oak leaves as in vanilla. Red and green apples drop from apple leaves with equal probability. On average, one apple tree might drop between 2 and 5 apples.

Apples can also be found in the chests of many structures: Hobbit holes, Rohan watchtowers, various camps, and several others.

Some traders may sell apples. These include Gondor greengrocers and Hobbit orcharders as well as Rohirrim meadhosts, orcharders, and stablemasters.

Uses[]

Both types of apple restore 4 ( 4 ) hunger points when eaten. Apples may also be used to brew cider, make apple juice, bake a delicious apple crumble, or turn a profit from various traders.

Apples, both red and green, are used to breed Horses, Elk, and Shire ponies. Golden apples and carrots cannot be used to breed any Middle-earth mounts.

Apples are frequent elements in Hobbit mini-quests.

Note: When giving quests for delivering apples, Hobbits (and other NPCs) do not specify which color of apple they want, however they do want one or the other. To solve this conundrum, look into the Red Book and check the color of the item icon.
