and death's shadow grows
In the king's hand lying!
–The Return of the King, The Houses of Healing
Athelas, also known as kingsfoil or asëa aranion, is a plant that was carried over the seas to Middle-earth by the Númenóreans. Over time, the knowledge of its powerful healing purposes was forgotten by most, and was even considered worthless. However, certain tales in Gondor still tell of its power in the hands of the true king. It has been known to temporarily counter the effect of Morgul Blades. However forgotten in the south or not, the rangers relearned the use of it again and started using it again in the later third age.
Upon obtaining Athelas, the player earns the achievement "Kingsfoil"
Occurrence[edit | edit source]
Athelas is found in places where the Númenóreans used to and still live and camp, which are the plains of Gondor and Ithilien, as well as various regions in north-west Middle-earth, which includes Eriador, the Lone-lands, Trollshaws and all biomes therein. This plant is usually found growing in small groups (often between 1 and 16 individual plants), but they are extremely rare (found in approximately one in 40 chunks).
As of Public Beta 24, Athelas spawns in frequent patches on the island of Meneltarma. The algorithm used to spawn athelas on Meneltarma is the same used to spawn all kinds of flowers, rather than the specific Athelas algorithm, so Athelas is far more common here than in other biomes. Also, using bonemeal on grass in the Meneltarma biome has a very rare chance of growing new Athelas (this is around 1 Athelas plant for every 64 bonemeal).
A full list of biomes that are known to support the natural growth and reproduction of the fragile Athelas plant, is presented below.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Unlike other Mod flowers, this one can not be crafted into dyes.
Athelas is used to create a brew, which gives the player strength and regeneration upon consumption.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Athelas was used by Aragorn to heal Frodo after he was stabbed by the Witch-King of Angmar at Weathertop.
- In The Return of the King, Athelas was used by Aragorn and the sons of Elrond to heal people afflicted by the black breath of the Nazgûl, including Merry, Éowyn and Faramir.
- Lore-wise, Athelas is a common weed. However, it is very rare in the Mod for balance purposes.
- When using the pirate speak language, athelas is named kingsfoil to the player.
