“ | And then he cast the [athelas] leaves into the bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which the fair world in spring is itself but a fleeting memory. | ” |
–The Return of the King, The Houses of Healing |
Athelas brew is the healing drink of the Dúnedain made with Athelas. Unfortunately, its beneficial effects are forgotten by most, save the Rangers of the North. The player will receive a strength and regeneration bonus when drinking Athelas brew. In addition, the player's hunger bar will be restored a great amount, depending on the potency.
Lore[]
In the books, Athelas is a powerful, but almost forgotten healing herb; its use, however, diverges with the one described here. The leaves are crushed in boiling water, giving off a healthy smell, and wounds are bathed and cleaned with the resulting potion. This method is explicitly used thrice: once on Weathertop after the attack on Frodo, and twice in the Houses of Healing of Minas Tirith, when Aragorn strives to heal Faramir and Éowyn.
Brewing[]
Athelas brew can be brewed in a barrel with six Athelas plants and the standard three water buckets. The brewing consists of five potency steps, each of which increases the drink's effects. These steps are: weak, light, moderate, strong, and potent Athelas brew.
Effects[]
A mug of Athelas brew will grant the player a strength and regeneration bonus. In a potent Athelas brew, regeneration lasts 3:00 and strength lasts 6:00. Furthermore it will cure any negative potion effects from the player. Depending upon the potency, the drink will also partly fill the player's hunger bar. Additionally, Athelas will never leave a player drunk even at its highest potency. These features, combined with its positive buffs, makes Athelas brew perhaps the most powerful and useful magical drink in this Mod.
Potency | Strength Duration | Regeneration Duration | Hunger Restored | Saturation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Weak | 0:30 | 0:15 | 1.8 | |
Light | 1:00 | 0:30 | 4.5 | |
Moderate | 2:00 | 1:00 | 7.2 | |
Strong | 4:00 | 2:00 | 12 | |
Potent | 6:00 | 3:00 | 16.2 |
Note that the effects are not stackable. When drinking another beverage while one is already in effect (the same or another one), it merely resets the various effects to the largest duration between the remaining ones already active and the new ones. For example:
- First you drink a weak Athelas brew; you get strength for 30 sec and regeneration for 15 sec.
- 5 seconds later, you drink moderate Orc draught; regeneration remains at 10 sec, while strength increase to 1 min and you also get speed to 1 min.
- 30 sec later, you drink potent Miruvor; strength and speed effects both increase to 2 min.
- In all that, the regeneration, strength and speed bonuses don't change.
