‘Éomer, my son! You lead the first éored,’ said Théoden; ‘and it shall go behind the king's banner in the centre.’

–The Ride of The Rohirrim, The Return of The King

Banners are faction-specific entities that display symbols of that faction. They can be placed on a wall or on the ground, and can be used to lay claim to an area of land.

Banners are also wielded by hireable units called banner bearers. There is a banner bearer for most factions that have a banner.

Protecting an area with a banner for the first time will award the achievement "The Conqueror".

List of Banners[]

Banners are crafted with one wooden plank of any type, one stick and one block of wool. Banners of Lothlórien use mallorn wood planks and sticks. Some faction banners need an additional ingredient. Each banner has to be crafted on the corresponding faction's crafting table.

Banners can be used to claim land by placing them on a block of bronze (protects 17x17x17), silver (33x33x33), or gold (65x65x65). You need at least +1 alignment to the respective faction to do this.

Banner protection can be disabled and configured via the config file. You can also set a cooldown time for warning messages there. The whole mechanic is most useful and important for playing on servers.

When you press the F3-key, you can see the banner (even through blocks), highlighted in green, and the protected area, shown by a green cube (for some reason, banners and their protection cube sometimes become invisible on servers, though the protection is still in effect).

The self-protection option in the banner GUI will default to on; this prevents enemy or non-whitelisted players from breaking the banner manually (whereas if it is off, anyone can break it). Self-protection can be disabled via the config file.

If two banners' protection areas overlap, the intersection area will be protected according to both rules. Only players who conform to both banner requirements can modify blocks. It is not possible to place a protection banner where it might overlap with another player's banner protection. Thus there are no known legitimate ways (other than a banner with self-protection disabled) to take over already claimed land.

Banners with custom protection data (most commonly, a long list of whitelisted players) can be duplicated. Breaking a placed banner will yield a banner item with the NBT data of the original. Crafting this custom banner with another banner of the same faction in a vanilla crafting GUI will yield two copies of the original banner, with data intact. Also, a custom banner's data can be cleared by placing it by itself in the crafting GUI and taking out the cleared banner of the result slot.

Right-clicking a protection banner will display a banner GUI, which has two options: Faction protection and whitelist protection.

Faction protection[]

AlignmentProtectionGUI

The player has placed a faction banner which requires at least 235 Gondor alignment.

Faction protection allows the modification of blocks only by players who have the amount of alignment entered into the textbox, which has to be at least 1. As you can enter higher numbers than your own, you can exclude yourself from modifying the area.

Should your alignment to your banner's faction sink below the set value, you won't be able to break your own faction banner. But it's always possible to access its GUI, as long as you can reach it, and change it to whitelist protection. After that, you will be able to break it.

In case that you walled your faction banner in, and then lost the respective alignment, you've got a problem. Either ask someone else with enough alignment to the banner's faction to make a way for you, or do some quests to regain enough alignment to grant you access again.

Whitelist protection[]

WhitelistProtectionGUI

Bilbo (owner) has placed a whitelist banner for his friends and the Fellowship of the Ring.

Whitelist protection allows the modification of blocks only by players whom you list in a group of textboxes. The default number of whitelist player slots is 16, but this can be changed by using the + or - buttons next to the list. The player that placed the banner is automatically added to the list and cannot be removed.

Since the introduction of fellowships, it's also possible to add those by typing f/ in front of the name. The Mod checks the name and tells you if the name doesn't exist, to prevent typos. Also, the whitelist entry changes automatically if the fellowship's name is changed.

[]

Within the given range, no enemies of the banner's faction (or the 'hostile' faction), bandits or invasions can spawn. By default, players that are excluded by the banner (either by alignment or whitelist) cannot set or destroy blocks, nor interact with doors, containers, beds, crafting tables etc. They also can't set custom waypoints within the protection zone.

Explosions can't destroy terrain inside a banner-protected area with the exception of throwing exploding termites within an area you have access to. Because of this feature, Termites have become a banned item on many servers, unless they're used for brewing a particularly dangerous drink.

However, default permissions for a protection banner can be modified to allow all players to perform certain tasks (signified by their icon being in colour). These categories are Doors & Gates, Crafting Tables, Containers, Personal Containers (Ender Chests), Food & Drink, Beds, and Switches.

By default, whitelisted players are given all permissions (including placing and breaking blocks) but each whitelisted player's permissions can also be changed individually to prevent or allow actions in the same categories as above.

These permissions are particularly useful for the creation of inns etc. on servers, as it can allow all players to enter the inn and eat food from plates, without allowing them to break blocks (risking the inn's demise).

History[]

  • Public Beta 15 added the first few banners, initially as separate 'banner' and 'wall banner' items.
  • Public Beta 17 added banner bearers and banners for Near Harad and the High Elves.
  • Public Beta 18 added banners for the Blue Mountains.
  • Public Beta 19 added banner protection (only on gold blocks, in a 32 block cubic radius); combined 'banners' and 'wall banners' into one item; removed banners' gravity so they are broken when the block below them is; made banner bearers hold banners in their left hand, and changed Uruk-hai banners to show the white hand of Saruman.
  • Public Beta 19.1 allowed banners placed on gold blocks to prevent invasions and bandits.
  • Public Beta 20 added a rendered box to show the range of a banner's protection when in debug mode; prevented the use of buckets and thrown plates breaking glass inside protected areas and added banners for Dol Guldur, the Rangers of the North and Gundabad.
  • Public Beta 21 added an option for a required alignment level when in faction protection mode; a config option to disable banner protection; allowed banners to protect from TNT and orc bombs; prevented the creation of custom waypoints in banner-protected areas; added protection for placed entities (such as paintings, banners (including themselves by default), troll statues, item frames and wargskin rugs) and prevented banners from being destroyed by anything other than direct/indirect player attacks.
  • Public Beta 22 added shorter ranges of banner protection using bronze and silver blocks, and added banners for Ithilien and the Half-trolls.
  • Public Beta 23 added banners for the Morwaith and Dol Amroth.
  • Public Beta 23.3 prevented the spawning of mobs in the 'hostile' faction (such as crocodiles in banner protected areas.
  • Public Beta 25 added Taurethrim banners, a precise input box for required alignment level, and made banners save their protection data when dropped as items (which can be cleared by crafting, or duplicated by crafting with another banner).
  • Public Beta 26.3 allowed banners to protect against TNT minecarts.
  • Public Beta 28 added banners for Dale, Dorwinion and the hobbits, and retextured the Ranger and Morwaith banners.
  • Public Beta 29 added banners for the Rhudaur hillmen, Minas Morgul, the Black Uruks, Nan Ungol, and the stewards and fiefdoms of Gondor. It also made protection banners visible through blocks in creative with debug mode and retextured the banners for Gondor, Dol Amroth and Dol Guldur, and the stands for all banners so that they are all the same.
  • Public Beta 31 allowed banners with self-protection to only be broken by the owner. It also added a banner for the Easterlings.
  • Public Beta 32 added banner protection for fellowships and banners for Esgaroth and Rivendell.
  • Update 34 added new Near Harad banners.
  • Update 34.2 retextured the Taurethrim banner.
  • Update 35.4 prevented bombardiers damaging terrain by any protection banner (not just by banners of the bombardier's enemy factions).
  • Update 36 added the permissions system for banners and allowed creative mode players to shift-click while placing a protection banner to keep its previous owner. It also added the Bree-land banner.
