Cold be hand and heart and bone

and cold be sleep under stone never more to wake on stony bed never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead In the black wind the stars shall die and still be gold here let them lie till the Dark Lord lifts his hand over dead sea and withered land.

–Barrow-wight, Fog on the Barrow downs, The Fellowship of the Ring

Barrow-wights are fearsome creatures who dwell in the fog of the Barrow-downs. They were sent to occupy the Barrow-Downs Barrow, the resting place of many ancient kings of Cardolan.

Spawning

Barrow-wights shall spawn throughout the Barrow-downs, under the cover of the eerie mist of the downs, or when a player tries to open the chests that spawn in the Barrows. They can also be spawned manually in creative mode, with a spawn egg.

Behaviour

Should a player wander into the fog of the downs, Barrow-wights will instantly move towards them and attack them, until they have slain the player or have been killed themselves. As the player moves closer to them, the screen will go black around the edges and the FOV will change. If a Barrow-wight somehow happens to meet another NPC, they will attack men, orcs, elves, dwarves, and hobbits alike.

Killing a Barrow-wight earns the player the achievement "Cold be Hand..."

Drops

Barrow-Wights will most commonly drop bones and arrows, as well as some article of silver or a barrow blade. As rarer drops, however, they yield gold and larger coins, and, very rarely, they may drop Mithril.

Combat Method

File:Barrow-write-cave.png

First off what you want to do is avoid the ones not in the barrows, as they are very hard to kill and give the wither effect. Second, when you get to the barrows, you want to make a structure like the picture to the right. Then you open the chest to make a barrow-wright appear like so. The barrow-wight will then suffocate in your brick leaving you with all this loot; besides the spawn egg, flint and steel, stone, and torch I got out of creative. The silver, bones, and blade is what I got from the wraith and everything else was from the chest.

If, by chance, you are chased by a barrow-wight, and you have nowhere obvious to run, you can do the following: Pillar jump up three blocks (so that you are standing on the top one). The barrow wights will not be able to grab at you, but if you have a spear or other longer-range weapon, you will be able to eliminate those creeps.

Lore

The Barrow-wights began appearing in the Barrow-downs after the Dúnedain of Cardolan succumbed to the ravages of the Great Plague. They were put there by sorcerers of Angmar who corrupted the souls of the inhabitants of the Barrow-downs. The sorcerers were sent by the Witch-king of Angmar, who wished to keep the Dúnedain away from the downs.

On September 28, 3018, Frodo Baggins and his companions; Sam Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, and Pippin Took while passing through the Barrow-downs were captured one by one by the Barrow-wights and trapped in what was believed to be the cairn of the last prince of Cardolan.

There they were almost slain by a wight; three of the Hobbits had been lain in a barrow filled with a strange green light and were dressed in white robes and wore jewels and gold and had a sword across their necks. The wight had finished an incantation, and was preparing to finish them off when Frodo summoned up the courage to slice off its hand; he then called upon Tom Bombadil when the wight extinguished the dim light in the cavern.

Bombadil performed some kind of exorcism on the barrow, which caused the wight to flee with a shriek; he then gave the hobbits swords and then spread out the gold and treasures from the barrow on the grass so that the barrow's spell was broken and no wight would return to it.
