For each of the hobbits he chose a dagger, long, leaf-shaped, and keen, of marvellous workmanship, damasked with serpent-forms in red and gold. They gleamed as he drew them from their black sheaths, wrought of some strange metal, light and strong, and set with many fiery stones. Whether by some virtue in these sheaths or because of the spell that lay on the mound, the blades seemed untouched by time, unrusted, sharp, glittering in the sun.

The Barrow Blade is a type of dagger which can be obtained either as loot in the Barrow-Downs barrow or as a drop from the barrow-wight. They were known to be the ancient blades of the Men of the North, and were said to be relics of the Ancient kingdom of Cardolan.

Obtaining

Barrow Blades are currently only obtained as loot from Barrow-downs barrows or as a drop from barrow-wights, and are not craftable. However, they can be repaired on an anvil using iron-ingots. These small weapons typically come with the wightbane modifier, awarding the user an added 4 damage against barrow-wights. Besides being obtained from the Barrow Downs, it is also a drop from Dúnedain, as they can be found defending themselves with a Barrow Blade.

Lore

The Barrow Blades were forged long ago by Men of Westernesse, foes of the Dark Lord. They were wrought with spells of ruin for Wraiths, and the Witch-king of Angmar foremost. But the Dúnedain were overcome by the evil king of Carn Dûm, and for a thousand years their blades have lain under the earth. Yet they are unrusted, by the quality of their craft, and in scabbards of some black metal and damasked with gold and red and rubies they await new bearers.
