In Middle-earth, basalt generates in rugged patches which replace the surrounding surface blocks. These are uncommon in Mordor proper, but very frequent in Gorgoroth, where exposed lava sometimes generates at the centre of the patch.
In the vanilla game, basalt is found in the Basalt Deltas biome of the Nether.
Basalt can serve as a main building block or be used for decorative purposes. It can be placed along all three axes, like logs and pillars.
Alongside Mordor Rock, Mordor Dirt, and Mordor Gravel, basalt is one of the few blocks able to support Mordor plants: Withered Moss, which can only be planted on the aforementioned blocks, and Stabbing Thorns and Mordor Grass, which can also be planted on ordinary grass and dirt.
