Okay I know this was necrosposted but I'm bored and wanted to be the 200th comment :P
I'm not sure what to do in a situation of this sort.....should I report this? Now I feel kind of like a wet blanket for interrupting this Convo...
On another note, glad to see you have a new profile pic BlueGoldenRose. Though I thought you'd have an actual....blue golden rose...
Cheers!
XD
Nice work brov, looks cool!
Third age would definitely be the following.
1. mordor (obvious)
2. Haradrim ( counting half trolls, and umbar)
3. Dwarves of iron hills
4. Gondor
5. Lindon (too few of them to be higher)
Theres a couple reasons why harad is epic namely
MÛMAKIL
It is very simple the biggest kingdom in middle earth is Erebor next is Moria in the third place is the ancient kingdom of angband next is Arnor and i will close the top 5 with Mordor, my thought about the first two is that dwarves always built the mihgtest and most power full anf of course the biggest economies in middle earth
1. Angband - This should be a give me. Among the ranks of Angband were Balrogs AND dragons. Not to mention, Morgoth, the most powerful of the Valar, led them. Also, Thangorodrim, a triple volcano, could be weaponized - as was indicated in the Battle of Sudden Flame.
2. Mithrim - The High Kingdom of the House of Fingolfin. This Kingdom survived the Battle of Sudden Flame and many others. At its height, it was the most powerful of the Elven Kingdoms in the history of Middle Earth, although it was eventually worn down and conquered in the Battle of Unumbered Tears. They pushed back Balrogs.
3. Himring - The High Kingdom of the sons of Feanor, which was weaker than Mithrim, and also pushed back Balrogs and forests of orcs and tens of thousands of evil men.
4. Gondolin - I rank below Mithrim, because they were not as strong in the battles of Middle Earth. Although, it did take one of the largest invasions in history to take them out. This one included dragons and balrogs. Turgon led 10,000 troops, this is much smaller than the 105,000 host of Mithrim.
5. Nargothrond - The largest Kingdom of the Noldor, ruled by the House of Finarfin, but possessed Lords of the House of Feanor (including Curufin, father of Celebrimbor who forged the rings of power). Once Finrod Felegund was killed, political turmoil wealened the Kingdom. Morgoth waged war against this realm for some time, eventually taking the capital.
Honourable mentions.
Kingdoms of the second and third age were weaker than those of the first by the reckoning of the wise - the armies of Sauron were much weaker and smaller than those of Morgoth, and yet they were able to deal with the later Kingdoms..Part of the reason for the power of the Noldor Kingdoms was the elves had seen the light of the trees which infused them with power, some of the Elves were capable of doing battle against Maiar spirits such as Balrogs, capable of slaying dragons, and survivors gave Sauron reason to fear in later ages. Unfortunately, most Elves in Middle Earth from the end of the first age onward were only descended from the Noldor who had seen the trees, or were of the Sindar and Nandor - Teleri Elves who never traveled across. The Kingdoms of Lindon, Eregion, Lothlorien, and Mirkwood were not even close to as powerful as the old Kingdoms. Battles were MUCH smaller in the third age than the first - so while a large Sindar army like the Battle of Five Armies was 1000 strong, this is not even comparable to Turgon's van which had 10,000 High Elves, let alone Maedhros, Maglor, We know that thousands of elves died in the battle of Sudden Flame including Fingolfin, and that the next battle - Unumbered Tears, saw the deaths of tens of thousands of elves, and this was only the remnant.
Nuemnor is the most powerful Kingdom of men.
Doriath is the most powerful Sindar Kingdom
Lindon was the most powerful Elf Kingdom after the first age
Belegost and Nogrod were IMO more powerful than Khazad Dum, as they sacked Doriath and held their own in the battles against Morgoth, although weaker by far than the Elves. Khazad Dum was powerful at its height, but seemingly not all that powerful, as they struggled against Sauron during the Dark Years, and they fell to 1 Balrog - Keep in mind, Kingdoms like Mithrim and Himring each held off multiple Balrogs and hosts of Orcs.
I think it's important to note that the great fortress of Khazad-dum was near impenetrable from the outside. The massive network of sprawling tunnels would ensure the dwarves were supplied during sieges. During the dark years, Sauron and his armies weren't able to capture it due to the Dwarves' numerous defensive measures. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I got that from Tolkien gateway). It was only from a completely unexpected attack from the inside that led to the fall of Khazad Dum. (I'm not saying that Khazad-dum was stronger than the strongholds of the high- elves, but that Sauron himself couldn't touch it.)
