Grassblock

Dirt is a vanilla block that spawns on the surface of almost every biome in Middle-earth. See the category page for more types of dirt.

Obtaining[]

Dirt is one of the most common blocks in Minecraft, and can be obtained rather easily from almost any biome. However, if that is not enough, it can also be bought in groups of 8 from Rohan builders for 1-1 ( 1  to  1 ). It also has a roughly 1 in 4000 chance of being dropped by Gundabad Orcs...

To obtain unlimited dirt (if you cannot find enough for whatever reason), you can use the following method. Firstly grind some cobblestone in a millstone to get gravel (or obtain gravel any other way). Then craft 2 dirt with this gravel to get 4 barren dirt. Combine this barren dirt with seeds and you get 4 normal dirt blocks - double the amount you started with. This method can be repeated for unlimited dirt blocks using renewable ingredients.

Uses[]

Dirt is an essential ingredient for growing almost all kinds of crops. It is also necessary for the creation of Elven portals, and the crafting of multiple items, including waste blocks, dirt path, Torog stew, Wattle and Daub, thatch, and even bonemeal.

Slabs[]

Dirt slabs are used to create smoother roads, and it's also possible to craft them, using a vanilla crafting table and the standard slab recipe:

History[]

  • From Public Beta 28 until Public Beta 33, players could right click bare dirt with seeds to make them into grass blocks. Of course, bare dirt will grass over in time anyway, but this helped speed up the process greatly, and also allowed players to make grass blocks in places like the Far Harad jungle where grass didn't spread naturally from mud to dirt.
  • Public Beta 29 added dirt slabs, allowing for smoother road generation.
  • Update 34 added the ability to craft dirt from Barren Dirt using seeds.
  • Update 36 added a 'natural texture' feature for dirt, meaning that its texture rotates randomly for each block, making large areas of dirt less uniform.
