Unwearied then were Durin's folk;

Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

The Fellowship of the Ring, A Journey in the Dark

This article is about Durin's Folk; you'll find their relatives from the Blue Mountains here.

Dwarves are a race of short, stout folk who inhabit the Iron Hills. They have a love for stone and minerals and a deep distrust of the Elves, relating to multiple events in their history. They live underground in the mines and in Dwarven Houses and are also known for their appreciation of ale, tonic, and cooked meats. They spawn naturally underground in the Iron Hills along within Erebor under high light levels.

Dwarves have randomly selected patronymic names and a small variety of different skins, but they all have one thing in common: their rather impressive beards, which are found on both male and female dwarves. Upon speaking with a female dwarf, the player earns the achievement "Spot the Difference"

Behaviour[]

Dwarves are most commonly found underground, as they prefer to stay away from the open air of the surface world. They tend to spawn in well-lit places, but have no qualms against venturing into the darkness of unexplored caves. Dwarves occasionally produce a piece of meat or a mug of ale and consume it, healing themselves in the process.

Despite being civilians, dwarves are fearless and will not hesitate to attack hostile NPCs and players alike. Armed with dwarven daggers, dwarves defend themselves and their land with unwavering strength, fighting off all evil creatures and players that threaten them. Yet they are nonetheless a trustworthy and kindly people, and if your alignment with their faction is positive, they will speak to you freely and treat you as one of their own.

In the renewed version only, all dwarves have some natural knockback resistance: they are only knocked back 60% relative to other entities.

Spawning[]

Male dwarves naturally spawn and despawn in a similar manner to hostile mobs. They have some spawning restrictions: a dwarf will only spawn below y-layer 60, if the light level is greater than 9, and if the block below him is stone-type. At sufficient light levels, they will occasionally spawn aboveground in their home biomes or in biomes with high Durin's Folk conquest, but not as commonly as they spawn underground. Dwarf women only spawn in Dwarf Houses, though they can be hired as warriors from a Dwarf commander.

Dwarves that are bound to a specific structure, for example a Dwarf house or a Dwarven tower (but not a Dwarven mine) will not de-spawn. Also, Dwarven towers and Blue Mountains strongholds can spawn more dwarves over time if the initial dwarves need to be replaced, and in this scenario there is a different set of spawning conditions.

Drops[]

When slain, dwarves usually drop dwarf bones and may also drop a variety of other items, including food, drink, plates, drinking vessels, coal, torches, smithing scrolls, and lore-books. They will also sometimes drop more valuable materials such as iron, dwarf steel, silver or gold nuggets, and dwarven armour and equipment (they drop their daggers most commonly, but will occasionally drop tools and other weapons as well).

Hiring[]

Dwarves may be hired from a Dwarf commander, which may be found in Dwarven towers in Erebor and the Iron Hills. They will require you to have at least +200 Durin's Folk alignment, and begin at a cost of 40 silver coins. As per usual, pledging to Durin's Folk will halve the price.

Advantages[]

  • Higher health
  • Alert you of oncoming enemies with their war cries

Disadvantages[]

  • Expensive in all ways considering their weakness
  • Have no armour
  • Use daggers, making them very short range
  • Can only be hired in the Iron Hills and Erebor, quite far to the East

Speechbank[]

These stout people may at times seem stubborn and grumpy, but if you have Orc kills under your belt and you're interested in mining and craftsmanship, you'll find no better friends. Get on their bad side, however, and you're in for the fight of your life!

  • No Orc shall escape the edge of my axe!
  • By my beard, I would run ten leagues just for one pint of fresh Dwarven ale!
  • It is truly a great honour to fight beside a warrior such as yourself, Person!

Children[]

The young dwarves of the Iron hills also have their own speechbanks:

Friendly

  • Welcome to the Iron Hills, Person!
  • You're not one of Durin's Folk.
  • Greetings!
  • One day I'll be able to drink Dwarven ale. I can't wait!
  • Even my mother's beard is better than yours, Person!
  • Can you pass me some Dwarven ale while nobody's looking?
  • How are you, Person?
  • Raarrrgghh!
  • They say I'm too young to hunt Orcs! Ha!
  • I wish I could wear my father's armour...
  • I will have a great beard one day!
  • There is no weapon finer than a Dwarven axe, Person!
  • One day I shall fight the evil Orcs with my father!

Hostile

  • I don't like you. Go away!
  • You're a bad person, Person.
  • Raaaarrrrggghhh!
  • If I had an axe, I'd split your skull in two!
  • The Dwarves of old did not flee from enemies, and nor shall I!
  • You better run before my father comes back with his axe!
  • Leave or face the wrath of my kin!
  • We Dwarves know how to handle Orc-scum such as you!
  • You should leave our lands! We Dwarves do not welcome evil-doers such as you!
  • Filthy Orc! Crawl back to your hole or face the fury of my father!
