Paler indeed than the moon ailing in some slow eclipse was the light of it now, wavering and blowing like a noisome exhalation of decay, a corpse-light, a light that illuminated nothing.

–A description of Minas Morgul, The Two Towers, The Stairs of Cirith Ungol

Gulduril is a gem used by several evil factions to create armour, torches, and Morgul portals. It can be obtained by mining Gulduril Ore, which is found in Mordor, Dol Guldur, and Angmar. It is about as rare as gold, and just as valuable to the servants of Sauron. In Morgul Vale, it is about as common as iron.

Gulduril can be crafted into Gulduril Blocks for storage.

In the renewed version, it can also be found in crystal form.

Uses[]

Gulduril gems are used in a variety of sorcerous ways, and are commonly affiliated with the Nazgûl and their servants. Right clicking certain types of brick with Gulduril will consume the gem and convert the brick into Gulduril Brick, which takes on a sickly green aura and begins to give off light. This can be done to Mordor Brick, Angmar Brick, Dol Guldur Brick, Gondor Brick, and Númenórean Brick. Gulduril Brick is an essential part of the creation of Morgul Portals.

Gulduril also has a variety of uses in crafting. On the vanilla crafting table, nine Gulduril can be combined into a Gulduril Block which is mainly a decorative storage block, but can also be used as a light source. Gulduril can be crafted with sticks to create Morgul torches on several evil crafting tables, which also give off light.

Gulduril can also be alloyed with Orc steel or Morgul Iron in an Orc forge to make Morgul steel, which can in turn be used to craft Morgul Armour and the deadly Morgul Blade.

A player with negative Fangorn alignment may right-click a mallorn sapling with a Gulduril gem, turning it into a corrupt mallorn sapling, which may be used in Fangorn Forest to summon the Mallorn Ent.

Trivia[]

The name Gulduril is a Sindarin word, invented by the mod team. The root of the word is Guldur, which means "dark sorcery" (from Gul, "black arts, sorcery", and Dûr, "dark, sombre"). Associated with the suffix -ril, which means "brilliance" (mithril means, in fact, "grey brilliance"), it forms a new word, Gulduril, standing for "dark sorcery brilliance".
