You have an amusing profile. *Reads "While I have not yet read the LotR books..."* Stop right there, you haven't read them?! What are you doing with your life! Do your parents not know about this life-altering decision of yours?!
In all seriousness, I highly recommend you finish the books. I have every single LoTR related book Tolkien ever wrote, some written by other people, and then even more by Tolkien that aren't LoTR whatsoever. Then again, I read a lot.

Yeah, many of the Harry Potter books are a long haul. In my opinion, they're too long - as some one who speed read the entire Harry Potter series in 3 days, I can tell you that a lot of the content seems like filler. After so long, Rowling goes for quantity over quality. Just look at the Deathly Hallows! It's fairly long (took me 5 hours), but the plot is so convuluted. I prefer LoTR because it's quite rich in content, but is also more easily accesible. Then again, expecting Rowling to match one of the greatest literary geniuses of the 20th century is a long shot. If you're intimidated but like the book, try an hour or two each day.
