The obsidian shard is a material used to craft the tools and weapons of the Taurethrim people.
Obtaining[]
Deposits of obsidian gravel can be found lying on the surface of the jungle. Each gravel block, when ground in the millstone, will occasionally produce an obsidian shard. They can also be obtained by unsmelting Taurethrim weaponry.
Upon grinding Obsidian Gravel into an Obsidian Shard in a millstone, the player earns the achievement "Our Blades are Sharp."
Ordinary obsidian blocks can also be split into nine shards, using your personal crafting grid or a vanilla crafting table.
Some Taurethrim structures, in particular their houses and the jungle pyramids, may also contain a small number of obsidian shards in a chest.
Uses[]
Obsidian shards are used in the crafting of Taurethrim tools and weapons, obsidian bricks, and darts, all of which require the Taurethrim crafting table. It can also be used to craft obsidian Dwarven bricks (though not the variants) on a Dwarven crafting table using four shards.
On the vanilla crafting table, they can also be combined into regular blocks of obsidian:
Trivia[]
- Obsidian is similar to glass. When shattered it makes extremely sharp edges because of its conchoidal fracture pattern.
- Obsidian shard edges are several times sharper than steel blades can be, and people are considering using it for surgical scalpels in real life.
