“ | Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressëa, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in envy and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes. | ” |
–The Silmarillion, Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor |
Orcs are evil creatures that inhabit parts of Middle-earth. They can be found at night in many regions (Gondor, Wilderland, Vales of Anduin, Eriador for example), and also during daylight hours in three biomes (Mordor, Angmar, and Dol Guldur). In addition, Orcs may launch an invasion and attack a land where they do not normally spawn -- Lindon, for example, can be invaded by Gundabad Orcs. Orcs are commonly found in caves underground in their appropriate biomes as well as on the surface.
Orcs can be grouped into two major categories: regular Orcs and Uruks. Uruks are the stronger variant. They have higher health and wield better armor and weapons than their lesser counterparts. Gundabad, Isengard, and Mordor all have their own Uruk variations, while Dol Guldur and Angmar lack them. Uruks also spawn in fewer numbers and locations than the regular Orcs. Uruks of these different factions only spawn in Mordor, Nan-Curunír, Fangorn Wasteland, and the Uruk Highlands, day and night, and the Misty Mountains, Ettenmoors, Grey Mountains, Coldfells, and Rohan, only at night (aside from invasions of course). Uruks also spawn less commonly in invasions than regular Orcs.
Orcs and Uruks can be found in Orc Dungeons underground as well, guarding chests of Orcish loot. These dungeons generate in most biomes in the north of Middle-earth.
Orcs and Uruks alike have both melee fighter and archer variants. The melee fighters, depending on what faction they belong to, use either their corresponding equipment or scavenged gear. The archers wield Orc bows or Vanilla bows, depending on their faction, while Gundabad Uruk Archers and Black Uruk Archers wield their own specific bows. Only Gundabad Orc Archers and certain Uruks from Isengard have the ability to wield crossbows.
There are currently nine different Orc races in the Mod: Angmar Orcs, Black Uruks, Dol Guldur Orcs, Gundabad Orcs, Gundabad Uruks, Isengard Snaga, Mordor Orcs, Uruks of Isengard, and Utumno Orcs.
Orcs are subject to weakness and slowness debuffs during the day in most biomes in Middle-earth. Orcs are immune to daylight only in 4 specific places that are under the influence of great evil (Mordor and sub-biomes, Angmar and its mountainous variant, Dol Guldur, and Nan Curunír). This sensitivity does not apply to Uruks or Utumno Orcs, though the latter never see the light of day in survival.
The favorite tactic of orcs on the battlefield is outnumbering the enemy. The settling of this strategy is encouraged in the mod by making orcs very cheap in hiring. In-lore, orcs are actually pretty weak, and uruk-hai have been bred by Sauron and Saruman to justly compensate this weakness. So for lore-friendliness and in-game balance, orcs are cheaper to allow players hiring them in high number; but they suffer a -25% armour debuff (rounded to maximum, so if an orc wears an iron-tier armour (15), the quarter being 3.75, their defense points drop to 11!) This is why Mordor orcs sharing theoretically same stats than Gondor soldiers (20hp and 15 defense points) lose the most of their duels against them. This particular rule doesn't concern uruk-hai and Utumno orcs, however.
If one wields an Orc weapon and slays a man, it will give you Man-flesh.
If a player has earned -500 or lower alignment with the respective Orc faction, the members of that faction will fear the player and flee. Uruks are not subject to this fear; neither are Mordor or Utumno Orcs. Like their Warg allies, Orcs' eyes glow in the darkness, allowing them to be seen in dark places.
Orcs are very rude in their speech, even to allies. They can often be seen eating maggoty bread or drinking Orc draught when idle, or chasing and killing rabbits for no apparent reason. Orcs hate everything and everyone, including each other, and they can thus become involved in skirmishes, in which groups of Orcs will randomly start fighting amongst themselves and killing each other. Mordor Orcs are the most susceptible to this aggression, which can wipe out large groups of them once it gets started. Uruks are more disciplined and rarely get involved in these situations, though it has been reported to happen on occasion.
Upon killing an Orc, the player gains the achievement "Orc Slayer".
History
The Orcs were originally created by the Dark Lord Melkor, who captured elves and tortured them until eventually they became deformed, belligerent, cowardly slaves to his evil purposes. These were the first Orcs. After Melkor was overthrown in the War of Wrath, what few of the Orcs that remained splintered into warring tribes in secluded foothills and under mountains, their nature preventing them from banding together to forward the purpose of conquering the free peoples. They remained in a general disarray until the arrival of their new master, Sauron, under whom they rallied and fought the War of the Ring.
