A pickaxe is a tool required to mine most stone, ore, and metal blocks. While all the tools in Middle-earth are useful, most players agree that a pickaxe is the most important one of them all, as it is very difficult to obtain large quantities of metal or stone without one.
Faction pickaxes[]
Aside from the regular pickaxes found in vanilla Minecraft, many factions in the mod have their own pickaxe. Faction pickaxes are usually better than their vanilla counterparts, and can usually be crafted or bought from various merchants. Those factions that do not have their own pickaxe will have to make do with either the bronze pickaxe or the iron one.
A special pickaxe added by the mod is the Pickaxe of the Underworld. This pickaxe is required to mine Utumno blocks from within the Utumno dimension. Outside of Utumno, Utumno blocks can be mined by any pickaxe. This pickaxe can only be obtained as a rare drop from Utumno mobs. Although once you have one, you can repair it with Orc steel on an anvil.

History[]
Formerly, a diamond, Mithril, or Dwarven pickaxe was required to mine Mithril, but when diamonds were removed from Middle-earth, the iron-level pickaxes became capable of mining Mithril. This meant that iron-level pickaxes became capable of mining any stone other than obsidian and Utumno blocks.
