The Pickaxe of the Underworld is a rare drop from Utumno orcs, wargs, trolls, and other Utumno mobs. It is only dropped by mobs on the fire level of Utumno.
Uses[]
It is unique in that it is the only tool able to mine Utumno bricks and pillars while inside Utumno, and thus very useful: both for gathering blocks for decorative purposes, and for digging around in Utumno.
As of Public Beta 25 however, any pickaxe, including the wood one, can mine Utumno bricks while outside of Utumno.
The low durability of 80 uses makes it even more valuable, so it is recommended to save the pickaxe only for mining Utumno blocks and use other pickaxes elsewhere. However, you can repair it in an anvil using orc steel, which is easy enough to obtain, and it can have modifiers like any other item.
If you want to use the exclusive Utumno blocks for your buildings - for example to construct your own Utumno or Angband - then this tool is a must-have for you. However, you do not need this pickaxe to mine Utumno bricks in the overworld, so it might be easier to raze the Pits instead. Keep in mind that these bricks are both aesthetically pleasing and explosion proof.
Trivia[]
Before Public Beta 33 this pickaxe could be used to mine through to the different levels of Utumno, bypassing the need for keys. However, since Public Beta 21.1, the pickaxe can only be dropped on the lowest level, meaning that this was then only useful for subsequent trips.
