Shields are wearable items in The Lord of the Rings Mod that may be seen on both players and NPC's. Although shields in Renewed and Legacy use the same textures, they are obtained in different ways in the two versions, and have different functions.
Renewed[]
In Renewed, there are currently seven shields: Gondorian, Rohirric, Mordor and Dalish, as well as Umbaric, Harnennor and Coast Southron. It is likely that more shields will be added for the mod's other factions in the future. They are crafted using the same recipe as the vanilla shield, but on their respective faction's crafting tables.
Shields can be used for blocking attacks, just like in Vanilla, by right-clicking. Note that this will slow down the player's movement, and it's impossible to attack and block at the same time.
Some NPC's may spawn wielding a shield in their off-hand. These shields are not merely decorative; NPC's will use these to block incoming melee attacks. Basic units of many factions (i.e. Gundabad Orcs, Mordor Orcs, Dunlendings, Gondorians, etc), generally don't use shields, but the stronger units (i.e. Gondor Soldiers, Rohirrim Warriors, Southron Warriors, etc) do. If you're planning to fight NPC's that use shields, it's advisable to bring along a shield (or axe) for yourself.
One thing to keep in mind is that you can knock down an NPC's shield if you attack using an axe. Axe-wielding NPC's can also knock your shield down, too, so watch out!
Legacy[]
In Legacy, shields are wearable items that replaced capes in Public Beta 20. Shields are not craftable, but can be obtained by achieving certain goals in Middle-earth, be it from mini-quests, achievements, alignment, or something else.
The shields will not provide any more protection than the player's armour already provides and are purely decorative. They will also not be visible to anyone who does not have the Lord of the Rings mod installed. Shields will usually be worn on the back like a backpack, but will appear in the player's left hand when they wield an item dealing melee attack damage in their right hand.
The panel for selecting your shields can be accessed by opening the Middle-earth menu (default press "L") and clicking on the button for shields.
Certain NPCs will also spawn wearing shields.
All shields as of Update 36.15 are listed below, sorted into the categories and the order that they are found in on the Middle-earth menu.
