The Lord of the Rings Minecraft Mod Wiki

Legacy Renewed On April 10th 2020, it was officially announced that the Lord of the Rings Mod will be gradually ported to 1.15 (and newer versions of Minecraft as they come out) alongside the release of Update 36 for 1.7.10 (which is the last major update for the older version of Minecraft). Branded as the Mod Renewed, the 1.16 version is being released in relatively frequent 'snapshots' (akin to the vanilla snapshots) and will adapt all of the content added to the mod thus far to newer Minecraft versions.

This page will chronicle the snapshot process for the Mod Renewed until it catches up with the mod as it currently exists, after which point further updates will be dealt with as usual on the main updates page. It will also showcase several of the images posted on the mod's Facebook page, and the highlight videos made by Glflegolas, for each snapshot.

Read the full, official announcement of the Mod Renewed here.

You can read the full changelog for the Mod Renewed here.

The renewed version of the mod can also be found on CurseForge here.

If you use the Just Enough Items Mod (JEI), you can download a LotR plugin (made by Malvegil) here.

The focus for the snapshots around the time of 1.7's release is to add most of the major biomes so that Middle-earth map generation can be added without leaving too many gaps. Snapshot 3.0 was the first in over 7 years to directly update the mod to a new version of Minecraft (1.16.5). 1.16 made significant changes to how modded biomes and dimensions are coded which made this update take longer than originally planned (see the original announcement post here for more details). In terms of new features and changes due to new vanilla content, there aren't too many (as 1.16 was largely focused on the Nether and therefore not relevant to the mod). However, 3.0 does add basalt to Mordor, make biomes far more customisable using data packs, and add fish and chips!

You can download snapshot 3.0 here (Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge 36.1.0+).

Snapshot 5.0 was a large update that added speech properly to Renewed, with a brand-new system that is far superior to the legacy system (although in this update only hobbits, Rohirrim warriors, and Mordor orcs had their speech lines added). Codenamed Curuquesta, it decides a speech line by interpreting various (around 30 in total although not all are used by the mod's NPCs by default) conditions (of the NPC, player, and environment) and selecting from among the lines which satisfy those conditions, as defined in new JSON format speechbank files. Because of the adoption of JSON, speech can now also be customised via resource pack and support translations because a speechbank now points to a folder of language-code-named JSON files, rather than a single .txt file. As well as this new system, Snapshot 5.0 also ported drunken speech for NPCs and immersive speech pop ups above their heads.

As well as this important addition, Snapshot 5.0 also added some of the more usual features, such as Wood-elves, Breelanders, the Field of Cormallen and its endogenous Culumalda trees, as well as several tweaks and bugfixes.

Snapshot 5.1 was a smaller update that added more speechbanks (for civilians of Rohan, Gondorian soldiers and civilians and the Dwarves of Durin's Folk) and some more technical changes to NPCs and speech. Firstly, it updated the mod's skins and models to use the expanded post-1.8 player model features (separate right and left limbs, and a second layer for body, arms, and legs), as well as allowing female NPCs to use the 'Alex' model with slimmer arms. It also added the ability to use 'parent' lines of speech that can be used by multiple NPCs (to reduce unnecessary duplication), as well as a 'personality' speechbank condition with a system of ten independent pairs of personality traits for NPCs, to allow speechbank writers to give speechbanks more variety (Although these are not currently used in the base mod).

It also added one of the mod's oldest dynamic events - enemies of the Golden Wood should expect resistance if they try to harvest Mellyrn. There were also several visual improvements such as several retextures (including Hobbit skins that more closely match the new textureing style), a redesigned keg screen and remodelled NPCs that more closely match the heights descibed in the books (i.e. Elves are slightly taller and Orcs, Dwarves and Hobbits are slightly shorter).
