The Pits are a large castle-like structure in Forodwaith, and contain a seemingly endless black pit. There will be a large hole in the wall that leads to stairs. As you descend these stairs, a message box will appear on your screen cautioning you of the danger you face ahead. This message will NOT be shown again. At the bottom of the stairs, there is what appears to be a well. Once you jump down the well, blackness awaits you.

Getting to the Pits

Finding the Pits can be a hard task, because they only spawn in one location in all LoTR worlds, and there's no Fast Travel waypoint to give you a clue for how to get there. If you look at the chain of the Forodwaith Mountains that curves around the bay in the west, you will find a small, long, narrow valley close to the intersection of the two mountain ranges. It goes north-east into the mountains and has some small valleys branching off from it. Ignore the branching valleys and go to the end of the valley. Do not undertake this trip without adequate preparations. Make sure that you've got lots of food before you enter, as well as a suit of Warg Fur Armor, because this trip will involve a long march through the cold of Forodwaith. Also make sure you bring along good armour and weapons (and possibly some Athelas Brew), because you'll need them sooner or later...

The trip down to the bottom of the Pits is not for the unwary, for "There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world ...".

Trivia

This is one of the only three structures to spawn in one place, the others being Shrek's House and the Giant Cherry Tree in Mordor.
