  • In the books, orcs are mentioned as "having arms like the apes of the south"...

only one little problem, What apes of the South!

Apes would be similar to half-trolls in size, but would resemble more of a balrog body shape, where their heads are hung lower, arms are bigger than legs in proportion, and they are kinda hunched over.

They would be brown in color, and would have 50 health, and deal 4 hearts of damage per hit.

They would be found in the far Harad jungle and Jungle edge. Tauredain would use them as heavy units, like evil factions use ologs and trolls. They would be hired from a Tauredain ape trainer, which would be a new tauredain NPC.

This way good guys can get a heavy unit, since its not really fair that only evil players can currently.

    • well, good Players have huorns. and i think the apes should just be wild animals and not units. maybe they could have a special drop or could just be tamed like wolves?

Only the hired ones would be tamed. The normal ones would be wild.

    • I think tolkein was talking apes in africa, so no. This seems a bit farfetched. Apes the size of half trolls and used for war? That's funny.

    • Cool theory. Just saying, EliSuperHero, JRR Tolkien seldom refers to the 'modern' world in Lord of the Rings.

    • I don't think this is necessary. We don't need another "heavy unit". There isn't meant to be balance in the mod. The advantage of evil is heavy units and cheap troops. The advantage of good is stealth units and higher quality troops. To put it bluntly, this is just weird.

    • I like the idea of apes, but having them as hired combat units is a little far fetched to me.

"Apes"? There are many ape species, all of which are very different! Which do you have in mind!?!

From what he's describing, I would assume gorillas.

    • No combat, hiring, or taming, ect. Having them as a neutral/aggressive NPC would make sense.

    • If these are based on gorillas I'd imagine them potentially living in the cloud forest biome, something to make that biome a bit more unique.

    • The planned features page mentions new animals. So I think we can expect monkeys in Far Harad... one day. Also, they should be able to climb (like a spider does) wood and leaf blocks and throw rocks at you.

I also suggested that they should steal food items from your invetnory like bandits.

    • It would be good to have an ape as well as an monkey that you can tame with bananas! But they shouldn't be a heavy units.

Tolkien only mentioned "the great apes of the south". he didnt specify what they were, but i imagine them like gorillas. There could be different kinds, in different places, monkeys=jungle, gorillas=cloud forest, etc.

@High King Ithilion, i dont care wether or not they are hirable. I was just thinking of something that might make them a better feature.

Nah, they're the all the same thing.

Nah, while they have the same ancestor like us (we divided much later from a common ancestor of both apes and humans), they are two completely different things. So the right order is: common ancestor divided into both monkeys and our ancestor, and then our ancestor divided into apes and humans.

    • If orcs have arms like the apes of the south, it doesn't fit for them to be the size of Half-Trolls, unless orcs have been very differently mutated than we have envisioned all this time.

The idea of adding them is great, and I am sure Karseius will jump right on board with this, so I will show it to him. But using Wild Apes as cavalry is ludicrous. 1) They can't really hold on to them 2) My previous statement would indicate them being of a smaller size than you thought of. 3) The build of a monkey/ape is not strong enough to carry a human in gear on their back over planes or jungle. They'd most likely break their back after a while. They simply aren't build to be mounts. 4) There is no way they are capable of understanding commands. Sure the Trolls aren't the most intelligent either, but they can understand their language. I doubt a player or Tauredain can gibber "Yo attack those Black guys" at them.

I would like them as wild animals, but I would rather have them Hobbit sized and just to spice up the wildlife of the south a bit more in the jungles. But that is about it, since they can't climb or swing through the trees it would be a relatively goofy mob to see, since you would expect them to do something special.

    • Perhaps fitting with the quote, Orcs could be given longer arms in relation to their bodies? That is mentioned several times, not just here.

I never once said as cavalry. I said they could be heavy units, but never cavalry.

    • i love this idea, and agree with training them as tauredain units, except for 1 thing. apes lived in cloud forests as well, and as such i propose 2 types of gorillas, perhaps orangutans for the jungles and gorillas for the cloud forrest? or just a jungle version of gorilla for the jungle, normal for the cloud forest (or opposite that) either way i suppose i would want orangutans too.

      Model:

      head slightly bigger than humans

visibly larger fists than arms (same with feet, those things hands and feet are HUGE)

walk in a crouched position using arms (2 blocks tall)

when angered (you attack their fellows, them, or do something else incredibly stupid to them) they will stand to their full hieght on their back legs (3-4 blocks) and beat their chest perhaps for effect, or perhaps giving weak/slow to the nearby units/players. they would then proceed to maul the offending NPC/Player. also perhaps you can 'train' these with bananas...

    • Some Great Ape Info:

Male and Female Orangutangs look suprisingly different. In my understanding, usually the male sits on the ground and is quite large. He doesn't move much, but when provoked is absolutely terrifying. The Females seem to stay in the trees more and look a lot more like a classic ape. Their babies will cling to the mother as she climbs the trees. I personally would prefer Orangutangs to be added to the mod, but Gorillas would be pretty awesome as well. Another species of Ape would be Siamangs which are a pretty cool species of Ape and can live in peace with Orangutangs, sometimes being displayed togethor in zoos. Siamangs have very long arms, can inflate their necks to bellow, and move at good speed through the jungle by swinging.
