Whenever you ride a mount, you always go at full speed. I'm pretty sure that some people including myself do not wish to travel at that kind of speed all the time. That's why I am here to propose adding a function that allows for mounts to travel at different speeds.

1.One way to do this is to simply have the sprint key act as the button to slow the mount down, maybe to the speed of a walk or trot.

    2. Another way is to have a button that can be used to alternate between speed levels, preferably the sprint key. The levels cycle from walk, trot, and gallop. You simply need to press the button once to go from walk to trot, or trot to gallop, or gallop to walk.

-The speeds will be walk (25%), trot (50%), canter (75%), and gallop (100%)

    OR

-Walk speed is the same for all horses, while trot, canter, and gallop speeds will depend on the horse.

    OR

-Walk, trot, and canter speeds will be the same for all horses, while the gallop speed will depend on the horse.

I feel that this future will help add a more realistic atmosphere to the mod, and would be quite nice for some roleplay, like patrolling guards on horses or just having a nice walk around a lake without bolting off of a cliff before you can even turn.

This will also help with lag on servers.

    New Proposal----

Whips would be used to speed up the horse. Each time you use it, the horse will gain a 30% boost in speed.

It will be made from a stick and leather, and will have durability. There will be a cool down between uses, but if you use it too many time in succession, the horse will reel back and knock you off.

    Should whips be added?

I think all it really takes is just adding a new method in the mounts class or whatnot, but I could be horribly wrong.

    • I think it should be possible, just add a variable when calculating the speed of the horse, but I could also be wrong. A good idea though, and it would help reduce the speed that chunks are loaded on servers. Probebly 4 stages, 25% speed, 50% speed, 75% speed, and full speed.

I like those increments. I would say Walk, then Trot, then Canter, then Gallop.

I was thinking that you just press a button to cycle through the different speeds.

    • i would propose a riding/horse whip to toggle speeds (it would just toggle walk trot canter gallop back to walk, no damage i couldnt think of anything else to do it with) also on tame the default speed is walk. (perhaps add a horsey hunger bar so that the feeding of the animal actually makes sense?)

horsey hunger goes below its health

    • Alt could work, of course it could be changed in the controls menu, with an optional button for going down speeds. Going up at max run would bring you to walk, going down when walking would bring you to a max run.

That sounds a bit like a pain, honestly. Sometimes realism and gameplay don't mix well.

I'm kinda confused. Do you mean that there should be a limit that the button can be held down before the horse goes back to walking pace?

    • Another possibility is to turn W and S into accelerate/decelerate buttons. Just like an airplane throttle for example. There would be 5% intervals.

So if you hold W, it will go from 0% to 100% but you can stop anywhere in between. So you could also go to 60%, press S to decelerate to 45% and then go to cruising speed at 80%.

To increase realism, it would take some time for the mount to accelerate to it's top speed.

That makes the horses more like machines than actual animals tbh. I've ridden horses. They can stop and speed up very quickly.

The fact that I thought about incremental speed is because mounts in real life are trained to go at certain different speeds.

You're right. How about a combination of our 2 ideas? You could still use W and S as accelerate and decelerate, but you only have 4 different speeds to choose from! So If you want to go from standstill to gallop, you press W 4 times. and then to go from gallop to trot you press S 2 times and so on.

I'm not so keen on the acceleration part. I prefer having a button alternate speeds, from which you can just ride your mount normally.

the idea with them would be to either prevent long term galloping and have it be like an energy bar, or be a much slower moving version of the players (this would add a need for feeding the horse, also at full-1missing regen would be increased (same as player))

      idea:

there would be an 'endurance bar' that needs to be partly full to go above a walk, if it empties you are stuck walking for 5 minutes then it automagically refills the bar (it replenishes slowly anyway if not empty)

Walk: still slight gain in endurance

      Trot: no effect

      Canter: slight decrease

Gallop: bigger  decrease (possibly can go for up to 10-20 min)

While I agree that the horse taking damage from being whipped every time is not practical in gameplay, I think that having a small chance (10% or less) for a horse to take damage when whipped would be beneficial. Or a second option would be if the horse is being repeatedly whipped in rapid succession it should take damage. I would far prefer the second option although I think it would be harder to code. I think having a system like this would add just enough realism while still being practical in gameplay.

Perhaps the whip could inflict 1 or 2 points of damage on a horse?
The whips never actually hurt the horse. And if it did, that would be animal abuse.

I don't think players will want to risk killing their mounts as well.

The horse will throw you off if you whip it too quickly. Is that not enought to balance it out?
Yea, I guess I didn't read the above posts as thoroughly as I should've.

      Naw it's fine.

    • I think that the whip should only yield a 30% speed increase for a limited amount of time, say 2-5 minutes, maybe?

That's quite long. I was just thinking of like 5 seconds of increased speed.
