  • This is the announcement thread for the tool "Music Pack Creator" (MPC), that allows you to create Music Packs in a more simple and fast way. Music Pack Creator contains an integrated version checker which shows a message if a new version was detected.

You can download the current version (Beta 4.1) of the MPC here . Java 8 is required (download ).

Here is a link to the initial blogpost.

If you encounter bugs, errors or crashes, please report them (with some additional informations like crash reports, so I can help you) on Github: https://github.com/CraftedMods/music-pack-creator/issues

mindofmike made a video how to use the Music Pack Creator (<= 2.1): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWixpg5Bsl4

Please don't ask for Music Packs on here. This thread is for discussions about the Music Pack Creator.

    • Beta 2.0 is out!

You can now import music packs you've created before, and change the look-and-feel of the GUI.

The generated music packs now contain a file "pack.properties" which stored the version of "Music Pack Creator" the pack was created with. This file does not affect the music pack itself.

Weight: A decimal number, the relative frequency to choose this track. (Not required. If not defined, defaults to 1. This shouldn't need to be defined in most cases.) You can view this information by hovering the associated input components with the mouse pointer.

    • Can you put the regions alphabetically so that they are easier to find?

        Loading editor
    • You can "enter" the region name white the combobox has the focus: This means, that if you press the key "m", the combobox will select an item starting with "m".

    • I have a question, does the weight decide how often it plays?

Edit: I read a few other comments, I figured it out

        Loading editor
    • You know what would be great .. a feature to select "biome" from the region list, and see wich specific tracks are selected for it, perhaps wich specific tracks are ONLY in that biome can be marked somehow, or show the weight of each track for that specific biome .. I dont know if this is even possible, but it would made this useful tool even better.

It's possible (Launch4J or AOT compiler, ...), but not neccessary. If Java was installed correctly, it should work.

    • To everyone having problems opening Jar files on Windows, I found that 7-Zip helped.

        Loading editor
    • There is a small possibility that you browser packed the .jar in a .zip. Simply extract it.

    • I made a basic pack with this excellent software but it seems to have the same problem as I've said here, as in even if more than one song is assigned to one biome, only one of them will be played. Do you have any idea why?

        Loading editor
    • I've created packs with several tracks per biome that do work. But it seems that some tracks play more often than others. This isn't a bug of the Music Pack Creator, but of the mod. Maybe it's just a subjective impression...

        Loading editor
    • Oh, I realise it is nothing to do with the music pack creator, I was just wondering if you knew anything about it. I'll play around with the weight variable as well and see if I can fix it.

    • New Version: Beta 3.0

I reworked the whole program, and changed many things. A few notable changes are:

      • The Music Pack Creator now uses Music Pack Projects, which simplifies and improves the creation of Music Packs (see https://www.dropbox.com/s/yyrla5l4fvx76ug/musicPackCreatorHelp.txt )
      • Most IO operations now use classes from java.nio package, which improves performance a lot
      • Reworked and improved the whole GUI
      • Added a splash screen

Important: This version is experimantal, and you can expect bugs. If you find some, please report them.

      Download: http://goo.gl/KTjzd1

(The program takes very long to start (10 to 20 Seconds), but currently I don't know the cause or how to fix it)

EDIT: The delay was caused by a bug with the lang file loader. I'll be fixed with the next update.

    • What are the rules about making music packs, can we not share them, because I cannot use Java, nor figure out (no matter how simple) how to make them myself, just out of my reach.

        Loading editor
    • Why aren't you able to use Java? If you've installed Minecraft, you should have Java as well.

        Loading editor
    • No....I use Chrome and as far as i'm aware, Java is not installed.......

        Loading editor
    • I am curious now.

        Loading editor
    • Download it here: java.com

Then start the installer (the file you've downloaded).

        Loading editor
    • Isn't Chrome dependent on some form of Java?

        Loading editor
    • No. Chrome supports Java Script (for Websites), but Java Script != Java. You could install an addon that allowed you to execute Java Applets, but this won't work for current versions of Chrome, because it doesn't support NPAPI (which is required by the Java Addon) anymore.

    • There seems to be a bug: You can specify "Andrast" as region and "Pukel" as subregion, but it should be the other way around imho.

I made a pack with the creator including several tracks, but the game refused to play some of the tracks. After looking a bit into it, I read in the readme in "lotrmusic" that "pukel" is supossed to be the region and "andrast" the subregion. Replacing these strings in the .json file, I was able to make the music pack run like a charm.

I hope this is of help, might be the reason why some people experience problems with their packs. Songs that listed "Andrast" as one of their regions just didn't play at all, in my case.

        Loading editor
    • Thanks for reporting.

      New version: Beta 3.3

      Some changes:

      • Fixed that the region "pukel" was named "andrast" (the Music Pack Creator will replace the region "andrast" with "pukel" when a Music Pack Project that contains a track with the region "andrast" will be imported/loaded)
      • On startup: If the loaded Music Pack Project was created with an older/newer version, a warning will be displayed
      • Double clicking a list item will trigger the same action as if you press the "edit" button
      • Fixed some errors with lang file entries

Important: I recommend you to backup the workspace of Music Pack Creator (the folder LOTRMusicPackCreator) if you run a new version for the first time

    • I want to make a suggestion. Would it be possible to assign several biomes at once for a single music file? For example, if I want to add a specific music that plays on Gondor, Rohan, Dale and Dorwinion, I have to go to each of those biomes in the list and add the music, in this case, four times separately. But in my suggestion you would load a music file, and add to it several biomes at once.

        Loading editor
    • I don't know if I've understood completely what you had said, but you can already assign several biomes to a track. This can be done by adding one or more "regions" to a track. How do you assign biomes to the track?

    • I think that what Dragonovith meant was like you have a random track (let's call it LOTR 1) so you have LOTR 1, would you be able to assign LOTR 1 to Rohan, Gondor and Mordor at the same time instead of having to assign them 1 by 1, just to make the work go somewhat quicker

        Loading editor
    • I don't think that this would be really quicker, especially if you want to change some region related settings, to example add/remove some subregions or categories. And, just as a note, you don't assign tracks to regions but regions to tracks.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, I noticed, it works really fine btw, but it does consume a lot of time nonetheless and is tiring (at least for me) but I'm now in the process of assigning the regions to the tracks.. and I have a lot of tracks, but luckily, most of them are needing to be assigned to 3-4 at once so it goes faster

        Loading editor
    • There shouldn't be a limit. What do you mean with "freezing"? Doesn't the program continue to export the pack or do you mean that the GUI doesn't react?

        Loading editor
    • As in, the bar showing progress on the export shows up and progresses fine up until one of the new songs, where it stops moving and says it's exporting it but doesn't regardless of how long I wait. It's been a week or so since I last tried, but if I recall, the application wouldn't let me interact with it.

        Loading editor
    • Youtube to mp3? Did you rename the .mp3 files to .ogg?

        Loading editor
    • The website had an option to convert the files to .ogg, all the files are definitely in the right format. Again, the pack was working perfectly fine til I added more songs. I tried doing it manually as well, and I'm pretty sure I did it right, but the mod wouldn't play any of the music. The .zip's over 300 mb, so if there's a size limit I would not be surprised if I hit it.

    • Here's the link to the one where I added the new tracks manually: https://www.mediafire.com/file/z15aq61qln6675n/Lock%27s%20Music%20Pack%20-%201.6.1.zip

        Loading editor
    • Yes, I did.

        Loading editor
    • And this works now?

        Loading editor
    • If the exporting of the pack is still not working, try this:

Create a file startMusicPackCreator.bat in the same directory as the Music Pack Creator (with the default text editor).

It's important that all file extensions are visible (http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/software/how-show-or-hide-file-extensions-3341794/).

Now right-click the created file and select "Edit". Enter this as the content of the file:

start java -jar "./Music Pack Creator Beta 3.5.jar" > mpc-log.txt

Save the changes and close the editor. Then double-click the file startMusicPackCreator.bat. The Music Pack Creator should start, and a file mpc-log.txt should be created. Try to export the Music Pack you've created, and wait. If the progam freezes again, kill it with the taskmanager and look at the file mpc-log.txt: Are there error messages or crash reports (has the file any content)? If yes, please post them.

The Music Pack Creator should display any error message from errors that occured in a dialog. Now it could be possible that some error occured, and the Music Pack Creator didn't display the error message; in this case the error message could be found in the logs.

This is necessary because the Music Pack Creator doesn't log error messages etc. to a file but only to the console (which will be fixed with the next update).

      1. I selected Region: BarrowDowns

      2. I selceted Day and Night

      3, Saved

I did manage to fix it by selecting Sub region for well BarrowDowns, it has no sub region but there seems to be an option for every biome even thogh some dosen't have more than one region.

The same fix worked for Dead Marshes.

Maybe you somehow linked some regions or maybe only those two to Mordor somehow? I don't know.

I didn't delete or move the file from the path I chose in the gui. It happened with one song thus far which is weird?

Edit: It seems that deleting the track from the project in the software and then recreating it exactly as I did before seems to fix it. Only problem is the fact that I basically have to do everything again. A lot of errors.

Edit 2: Nope, The original tracks or the OGG is probaly damage for whatever reason for now they keep repeating themseles, only the fact that they were loaded last after recreating it made me think it was fixed but I pretty much wasted almost an hour on that. At least now I know there are some specific files that are getting errors. So anyone know what it could be? Is it ppossible that I've got TOO many tracks? I've added 103 tracks...

Theoretically not, but I'll take a look at the code.

For your other problems, please post the JSON file the Music Pack Creator created (it's contained in the exported Music Pack) via pastebin. If there's an error with the Music Pack Creator, the JSON file contains wrong assigned tracks. If not, it has to be a bug with the LOTR Mod.

    • Ok, I'll respond to all of your posts:

      1. This is a problem with the region and subregion filter, I guess (did you mean that some regions appear (not) if they should (not) be filtered?). I'll take a look at it.
      2. I looked at the file "readme.txt" that was generated by the mod - there is no subregion called "grey mountains foothills".
      3. Many tracks shouldn't be a problem. But maybe they are. I'll test this.
      4. It seems that the Music Pack (to be specific: the tracks) wasn't exported correctly, but the JSON file looks ok.

I'll give you a testversion (when it's finished) which shows more informations about events occuring during the execution of the program.

    •   1. I was very vague about it sorry. I didn't quiet understand the problem back then or I was simply too tired.

Here's a clarification: I wanted the track to played only in Dagorlad, but the entirety of the Dead Marshes and the Barrow-downs so I didn't select any Sub Region for the 2 latter and certainly not for Barrow-downs since it doesn't have any Sub Region. I later added it as a sub region as well as all sub regions for the Dead Marshes instead of program knowing that by selecting no Sub Region should be the equivalent of selecting all Sub Regions. I hope that was more informative.

The other instance was that I had to create separate tracks if say one region I only wanted the song to apply at night while a few other i wanted to appear during both the day and night otherwise they somehow mix together and apply and and night for every region selected.

      2. I looked on the wiki page for the biome and according to it, it noted that it had a sub region although small. Maybe it was incorrectly written.

3 and 4. I looked at the music pack and every track I believe was there? Regardless it would only give me an error, "couldn't play the song" or something in the MultiMC log. In fact interestingly enough I did some research on similar cases and which I think you responded by asking the guy having similar issues to test an . ogg file called "Utumno Flame" or something downloadable somewhere on this wiki and that his tracks was probably corrupted and that you used Audicity to convert the tracks.

I'm not sure what the guy did to solve it but he seemed that fixed it for him noting that his tracks were corrupted for an unknown reason by maybe having converted them wrongly to ogg.

For me however that track "Utumno Flame" was not even an .ogg files but some other exception I can't remember what sorry so I converted it to an .ogg file but it too gave me the sane error as all other songs from my Music Pack.

    • Sorry for the late response.

      1. I've to test this further
      2. There is a subbiome, yes, but no "music region". You can find all "music regions" in the readme.txt in lotrmusic
      3. I've added logging support: Try this pre-version (http://www.filedropper.com/musicpackcreatorbeta36-pre) and post the content of the file mpc_logs.log located in the folder "logs" in LOTRMusicPackCreator. This only helps of error occur while exporting/modifying the Music Pack Project. I suggest you to clone your Workspace (the folder LOTRMusicPackCreator) --> move this folder in another folder with no files in. Then drop the version I linked in and start the Music Pack Creator as usual. There'll be a message saying there's a new version, but that's because the version I linked is an unofficial release. Then try to export the Music Pack Project, and post your logs on here.

    • It seems you've added the track (forestt (online-audio-converter.com).ogg) two times. The Music Pack Creator didn't check this, so this error occurs while exporting the Music Pack Project, because the Music Pack Creator tries to copy the same file twice to the same destination.

Is there any reason you've added the same track two times? This shouldn't be necessary.

        Loading editor
    • Do you mean adding the track twice in the software or having two copies for each track? For the former it was because I wanted to have that song played day and night in Mordor Nan Ungol but only Night in Mirkwood.

And it seems like you can't have regions mixed like that in one track for then it thinks every region is set for day and night where in this case it was only for Mordor.

I did consider that this was the issue having one ogg file play for two different tracks. So I made a clone of the ogg and selected each track a seperate clone but that didn't work.

        Loading editor
    • Both. Adding the same track multiple times in the software means that the software will export this track for multiple times resulting in the error you've got.

I guess the problem you have is because there's a bug with the filtering system. You can mix the regions up like you've written, but the Music Pack Creator doesn't show the right tracks if you filter them by their assigned regions/subregions/categories.

But it also could be a bug with the LOTR Mod, if you export the Music Pack Project and in MC the track plays at the wrong places. I suggest you to try this out; within the next days I'll provide a patch for the Music Pack Creator so that the filters work correct again.

        Loading editor
    • OK! I will merge everything into one track each. Until next patch, thank a lot!

Edit: I'm sorry if I'm being a nuisance but I though it would be nice to know how it turned out after having deleted all copies and instead merged them together. It did stop giving me an error upon exporting which was great but the MultiMC logging gives me error for every song saying:

[Client thread/WARN]: Unable to play unknown soundEvent: lotrmusic:(Track Name)

        Loading editor
    • Here is another (unofficial) version which fixes the filtering bug: http://www.filedropper.com/musicpackcreatorbeta36-pre2

Could you test it in a separate workspace (see above) to see if this works for you?

Concerning your issue: How did you convert your tracks?

        Loading editor
    • I've since been playing other games, sorry for the delay. I tried the version but the filtering is still finnicky as in it dosen't accuratly show the tracks. Such as a track chosen to be played only during the day in Ettenmoors and also play all the time in Barrow Downs - By filtering Angar-Ettenmoors-Night it shows that tracks yet it was only for the day.

I at first used some converter on the net, but then I used Audicity - same issue.

    • The next version of the Music Pack Creator will contain a basic audio player so you can hear how your tracks sound. This is especially useful if you're going to modify an existing Music Pack without knowing each track of it. What do you think about features like this? Are they useful? Or do you have suggestions or feedback how I can improve the Music Pack Creator? If yes, please post it here.

(This post is no reply to any of the posts above)

    • That will be extraordinarily useful. As for suggestions, a way to select what regions a piece plays in by inputting where it shouldn't play would be very useful, I'd think.

        Loading editor
    • Sorry for the late response. The problem with this is that the LOTR Mod doesn't support blacklisting regions, you can only specify the regions where a track is played (whitelisting). I could implement a blacklist in a way so that the MPC gives you the illusion that this is possible by adding a region blacklist to the GUI, but what it's really doing is to add every region not specified in the blacklist to the track. This works fine for most cases, but if the Music Pack is used with a newer version of the mod which contains new regions it probably won't work properly. Let's imagine that a Music Pack contains a track which plays in every region but Mordor. So you would blacklist the region Mordor. But because the LOTR Mod doesn't support blacklists, the MPC would have to simulate this by assigning every region but Mordor to the track. So if you use this pack with a new version which adds new regions, the track won't play in these, because they aren't assigned to the track. To fix this you would have to update the MPC and re-export the Music Pack - but don't change anything in the GUI. So the original idea of a blacklist would have been lost, just like the compatibility with the Music Pack to new versions. Because of this I won't implement this feature until the LOTR Mod supports this. I plann a suggestion about improvements to the Music Pack System in the near future so that this will be possible one day.

    • Also, there's a

      New version: Beta 4.0

      • Added an simple audio player - you can now play your tracks
      • Added an option to export a track
      • Various other improvements and fixes (see changelog)

      Download:

The audio player is an experimental feature - if you experience problems with it, please report them. Also I had to disable the support for translations because of internal changes; it'll be readded with the next update.

Backup your workspace - I'm not responsible for corrupted or loss data!

If you wonder how to play a track, here are some instructions:
      MusicPackCreator playTrack
      1. Right click an entry in the tracklist - a popup menu will appear
      2. Click on the menu item "Play"
      3. The audio player dialog should open and you'll hear the track

Alternatively you can play a track by pressing 'Space' if it's selected. If a track is corrupted or invalid, an error message will appear.

Besides that, when exporting my Music Pack into .zip, it makes empty .zip file and again, the window of Music Pack Creator freezes and when clicked on, the bell sound is being heard. • I had saved project within MPC 3.5 + .zip file of that project. Then after long time I tried import that project from .zip file - the window freezed. I downloaded 4.0 version of MPC. Importing the .zip into MPC again freezed the window. But luckily, I still have saved project from 3.5 of MPC. So I only pasted the project to the new version. It displayed well, but for example clicking on "Play" has no effect. I was adding new songs to the project. Then I saved the project and exported it. It has made empty .zip file and the window again freezed. When restarting MPC, all edits i have made to the project where away.

        Loading editor
    • But I am looking on the 9. + 10. line of the pastebin page. The location of MPC has slightly changed since last time using MPC 3.5 (when it was working fine).

        Loading editor
    • It seems that a file which is essential for the project wasn't found. The problem is probably that the Music Pack you've imported wasn't imported correctly. When you import a Music Pack, a dialog appears showing a progress bar which indicates the import progress. While this dialog is open, you cannot interact with the main window - when you click on it, you'll hear the "bell" sound. So I guess that the progress bar dialog was hidden behind some other windows while you've imported the Music Pack. Then you did terminate the Music Pack Creator, which left the half-imported Music Pack Project in an undefined state. So in conclusion I suggest you to delete the corrupted Music Pack Project and to re-import the Music Pack. If the window freezes, minimize other windows to look whether the progress bar dialog is behind them. At least wait for some time, so the pack can be imported. If this doesn't work, post the new logs.

        Loading editor
    • I didn't imported half of the project when i was importing from .zip. I did not imported nothing in that way. I just pasted the files from project within old version of MPC. But when I am importing something, it freezes, and it is not showing any progress bar. It will import nothing. The new log now is only: mpcLog_latest.log.

        Loading editor
    • With importing I mean that you import a previously exported Music Pack (a .zip file) via the menu item File/Import. Is this the case? The log shows no errors, so I'm sure that the import process works. How long did you wait? How many tracks are in the Music Pack?

        Loading editor
    • Yes, i too mean importing from .zip file into MPC via the menu. I have must to shut down the window while "importing" and the projects file contaned only empty folder with name the same as .zip file name is. I waited few minutes. There are 38 tracks. But I bet there is problem with that I changed location of MPC.

        Loading editor
    • Changing the location of the MPC shouldn't trigger any errors if you import a Music Pack from a .zip. But what's possible is that existing Music Pack Projects in the folder "projects" won't be loaded correctly if you've moved the workspace. I suggest you to create a new folder and insert and start a version of the MPC (create a new workspace). Then try to import the Music Pack again. The .zip you're importing is a Music Pack (so you've previously exported a Music Pack Project with the MPC to it), isn't it?

        Loading editor
    • Yes, I am importing .zip that I have exported before moving workspace. I moved MPC into new folder and still, I cannot import the Music Pack, it freezes and i must restart it.

        Loading editor
    • Weird. How do you restart the MPC? Did you terminate it with the Taskmanager (assuming you're using Windows)?

    • would it be possible to add more specification to the editor in terms or where and when tracks play? its fantastic what youvedone but im thinking there are 3 things that would help if you could add them, prehaps they could go under an advanced options tab?

1 whats the weather like, raining, clear...

2 what biome variant is it, forest, plateau, hills...

3 an ability to play soundtracks over each other if you really want, prehaps have a simple checkbox for each track?

and prehaps a height in the y direction.

Im mainly mentioning this as id like to incorperate ambient sounds like rainfall, howling wind, birds chirping into the game and if this was possible it would mean i could merge it with the music pack.

if not i understand, its a big ask but would it be possible to do this by directly editing the music pack files by hand if not?

      thanks in advance

    • No problem. These features cannot be added by the Music Pack Creator (MPC), but the LOTR Mod has to support them. The MPC just allows you to create and export a Music Pack Project, which then will be parsed and processed by the LOTR Mod. But what's really possible with these packs depends on the functionality of the LOTR Mod.

    • New Update: Beta 4.1

      • Updated the available regions to v35.3 of the LOTR Mod

Note that with v34 umbar was moved from a region to a subregion - you've to adjust your Music Packs to that. Normally I would have written a converter for that, but because I'm working on a new codebase for the MPC, this is too cumbersome to do. The converter will be added with 5.0.0-BETA.

      Just asking :)

    • Of course this is possible. I'm currently continuing to rewrite the program (I started over a year ago, but because of university and so on, did only a little progress), and planning to improve it's usability. I'll open a new issue at the repository of the project, and take a look then it's time to implement new features. Though I can't say when this will be, in three weeks my studies to start again. But I won't forget about it, see https://github.com/CraftedMods/music-pack-creator/issues/39

For further suggestions please open an issue at my repository, because this thread is mainly for announcements.
