  • Hello again, I'm here with another suggestion in regards to the flora of Middle-Earth. In continuation to my previous¬†suggestion on desert roses, I will be sticking to the theme of arid climate flora.

This suggestion concerns that icon of the desert, the cactus. Currently, the only cactus in the mod is the Vanilla cactus, which to me, looks utterly bizarre, even for MC's blocky graphics. I propose the addition of several smaller cacti, which will add a little variety and colour to the flora of Middle Earth's deserts.

These cacti can be planted on sand (and, if possible, gravel and dirt as well), in addition to in flower pots. They naturally generate relatively frequently in Harondor, all Near Harad biomes except the sandy desert (even in real life, cacti don't grow on dunes), and the Last Desert. They will spawn in small groups of their particular colour variant. They can be crafted to yield cactus green dye - as their flowers are small, it is unlikely they would have any effect on the colour of the dye.

Finally, here are the textures. I have tested how they look in-game, and I confess myself rather proud of the result.

SmallCactus pink SmallCactus purple SmallCactus yellow SmallCactus white

    • May as well post all textures and models of flora and fauna featured in numerous other mods.

    • What do you mean by that?

    • Are you familiar with Pam's HarvestCraft, PlantMegaPack, Biomes of Plenty, ExtraBiomesXL, MoCreatures, Botany, SlimeFun, ...?

Really, consider whether you actually want or even need to use this forum/board to share you custom textured plants with Mevans and Gruk. I don't think it's useful and it basically undermines the intentions we have with the WntS page, creating precedential opportunity for numerous suggestions the mod team may not have any need for.

I have a personal request to you: Contact Mevans/Gruk and ask him about his view on this issue. Shall we reopen the gates for an inflood of suggestions on obvious additions to the mods flora and fauna or not?

    • I fail to comprehend your connection between suggestions such as this and the pointless suggestions that are frequently proposed by anons and new users. If anything, they should give new users an idea on the level of detail required for a proposition such as this. I know that there are many suggestions out there that list tons of proposals, but they did not come with detailed info, let alone textures. That's where I draw the line. Also, what is with the use of italics?

As long as it has textures its concrete imo

    • Agreed. I think I'll make a forum post about the WNTS parameters; if they're taken too seriously, we'd be ruling out more than half of the endorsed suggestions in this wiki.

Well, Mevans did kudo my last suggestion on desert roses, which you also had an issue with, so I would venture to say that he doesn't have a problem with my suggestions.

    • Ah. Right. So you may as well have send it to the mod team straight away.¬†;)

    • well, regardless of what's goin' on down in the comments (imma stay out of that), I think you did a great job on the textures¬†:P

    • These look great! I definately think that a suggestion including textures such as this cannot possibly be an unnecessary flooding of the suggestions forum!

I must say, this is all too true. If we follow the letter of the law of the WntS, then almost the only suggestions allowed would be revisions to existing features(which range in quality immensely, like any suggestion) and a select subset of gameplay mechanic features, excluding many suggestions, including some of Alte's.. Unless, of course, we also enforce the second half of the first sentence of the WntS page. I'd say that many suggestions, actually, are very specific and concrete about how to implement things on the WntS in an original and non-obvious manner.

    • Should I make a highlighted thread on it, or do we generally agree already?

    • No need for another pointless discussion on this imo. I will bend to the general consensus despite my strong, persistent gut feeling about this. I feel it's no use trying to further explain my concerns if none seem to get the point of my hints and remarks here. Let's just experience what happens while proceeding with the less strict approach you all favour. Point made. Point taken.
