  • In the progress of creating my lotr mod resource pack, Immersion , I decided to try changing the torch flame particles, so that it would fit better with the surrounding textures. I quickly grew very frustrated, however, when despite all of my efforts and a good deal of troubleshooting, the custom particles simply wouldn't show up. Here are some details that I managed to learn through my testing:

Firstly, the particles work just fine in vanilla 1.7.10, but as soon as I add the mod, without using the usual optifine and fastcraft, the torch flames revert to the vanilla textures.  The pack is at a 32x32 resolution, so the particles.png is 256x256, with individual particles having dimensions of 16x16 pixels. I used the default particles.png file, upscaled it, and then edited the two flame particles, so that is the only change, apart from the increased resolution.

I'm not sure if this was related, but I'll include it anyway... Originally, I had only textured the main flame particle. When I saw that it wasn't working, I textured the second one (a smaller, less common one), and then used the shortcut F3 + t to reload the textures in the pack. The game gave me an out of memory error, and quit me back to the title screen. I then went back into the game, and lo' and behold, my flame textures were working. The game was extremely laggy, though, and so I quit out and reopened the game, only to find that the default textures were back. I have not been able to replicate this situation, and have not seen the textures since, except in vanilla.

I don't have a crash report, as my game never actually crashed, but I hope this is enough to hopefully solve the issue. I apologize if this somehow isn't mod-related afterall, and I hope that this has been helpful. While particles are not essential to my resource pack, they could add a good deal more immersion (no pun intended), and I really hope that this issue can be repaired. Best, - Quin

How much RAM do you have allocated? Have you tried adding more?

I have 2 GB allocated for the mod. I don't get out of memory errors very often, but they do happen on rare occasions. I can't really allocate more RAM though, because I only have 8 GB total, so there's not much to spare. The out of memory error isn't really the problem, though, I just included that bit in there in case maybe there is some sort of strange influx of memory usage sometimes caused by whatever is preventing the particles from registering. I really wouldn't know, but I figured more information can't hurt.

    • Having insufficient RAM available has been known to cause textures not to load. Your resource pack is increasing the texture size by a factor of 4, so it is not unreasonable to assume that you would need more than the recommend 2 GB to use your resource pack. If you aren't able to do this yourself, then perhaps you should give it to someone else to see if it works with more RAM.

I did try allocating 3 GB, and the texture still did not show up. Also, I disproved that the resolution has anything to do with this bug. I created an alternative test pack that had only the vanilla particles.png in it, with the only change being the color of the flame particles, and it still did not register. Note also that I did again test this temporary pack in vanilla 1.7.10, and it functioned perfectly.

If the resolution of the pack were really an issue, I doubt it would only affect particles. Besides, the pack, while higher resolution, is still only 32x32 pixels, and while not all of my computer components are super powerful, I am still running on a gtx 1070, and a computer build that can run Assassin's Creed Odyssey at max graphics with no hitches.

I think it's safe to say that this glitch is mod-related, and not client-side.

    • Also, I don't understand why you moved this to the technical support board. I think, given the specifics, that this is clearly most likely related to lotr mod code.

Honestly, I would probably liken it to the past lighting glitch with carved writing in the mod. This is a visual glitch, occuring due to some unseen circumstance, but I really don't see how it could be at all possible to rectify this on the user's side, nor fixed in any way unless the code of the mod is actually modified. So, really, this doesn't belong here, and should have remained on the Bug Reports board.

    • I'm not sure if this is considered necroposting or not, but I figured that with the recent update having been released, it might be worth bringing this bug up again, in case it can be resolved. let me know if I did anything wrong.

    • i'm having the same issue, though i'm not using a mod (besides optifine) i cant seem to get my custom particles to work properly none of them show up after i have changed them, i dont have any suggestions other than to see if you can copy the texture pack to vanilla and see if it works, other than that it would be nice to see this "bug" fixed.

    • While this isn't entirely critical, as the issue is resolved in the Renewed snapshots, This bug still persists in Update 36. Just commenting to hopefully bring it to light and potentially get it fixed.
