    I'm currently designing walls for my Fortress. And there's some questions about design choices coming up.

    I can optimize walls for Human Players or for NPCs.

    1.) Protection vs falling down NPC save walls obviously require the design to make it impossible for them to fall down (which isn't that big of a problem for Human players). It's not that big of a concession, and generally I think it should be NPC-save, which is more important that a little better FOV.

    2.) Protection against long-range snipers My major concern about walls is that some Factions have way lower Bow-range than others, and pretty much all NPCs usually have way lower range than attacking human players.

    For example:

    range: 125% 24 blocks: Bow of Mirkwood (Wood Elf Scouts);
    range: 150% 29 blocks: Rivendell Bow;
    range: 163% 31 blocks: human Players attacking

    So if you stack the wall with eg. Wood-Elf scouts, no matter how good the wall generally is, they have literally zero chance to kill enemy players with far larger Bow range, which makes me think - should I just block off the view completely for long-range shots and only put machiculations on the wall that allow firing at very close range targets, like 1-20 blocks from the wall?

    This way, the wall doesn't look as pretty and you can't really see anything that's further away than eg. 20 blocks, but enemy players can't simply pick-off all your defending archers on the wall.

    How do you solve this Problem? Make it more pretty but less secure, or vice versa?

      my 1st wall design, NPC proof, extra wide machicolations, I built all 4 sides because rotating in WorldEdit always screws up the stairs' orientation, and other things. In the version i have anyway.
      Update: last image shows a modification I had to do because NPCs were still getting over the wall sometimes... Now they can't fall down, but they're most times too stupid to shoot down, cause they can't see properly or whatever. It's super easy to fire down really.

    • this is not a castle/fort or anything really but a Wall design. You can use it as a fort of course, but you need to add stairs etc...

    • thanks Foeslayer, I posted the schematic file above. It's not really impressive, but I always try to make it functional first, and later make it prettier.

    • I'm very busy currently, but I'll try to make another wall design for NPCs, because on this wall, they are shooting into the wall too often. the AI is too limited to figure out how to shoot through the gaps most times.
      A wall optimised for NPC shooting + machicolations will not look as good, but then it's main point is functionality.

    • If you're designing a wall for practical uses in PvP, don't bother designing your wall with NPCs in mind. You want to be able to shoot both long range and short (so you can get people right up at your wall), and you also want places to take cover to heal.

      Here's a simpler design for the wall. NPCs have it slightly easier to shoot, but still not great, but the wall is a lot simpler now also. Naturally, you need to make additional things yourself, like a retreat area to heal up, and of course gatehouses, stairs, tunnels, whatever. I just made it to "enclose" an island base, later I will probably design a Fortress connected to the wall.

    • not really, since it's not a suggestion, I was asking questions. Besides, with the few people participating in forum, who tf cares, but actually, at this point, I guess if a Mod wants to, the thread could be moved into builds section as well.

    • It doesn't matter how many people are here - that's like saying if there's only 10 people in a town its okay to invade someone's home or steal things from one of those 10 strangers. If rules fall, this entire Forum will be full of vagabonds and fools! And than what will happen? It will be closed, and the creators will be suspicious about opening another, which will mean people with good suggestions will not be able to suggest them.

      Also the reply of who tf cares, and the blatant disregard to the importance of the rules, and the "at this point comment" and "few people" on. There are over 1000 people here! At least 50 people comment every now and then! I'm sure I could find more examples, but I'd have to search. But I swear I've seen a few similar comments around here.....
