The throwing axe is a type of ranged throwing weapon in the Mod. Formerly unique to the Dwarves, they are now available to all players and are also used by the Dunlendings, Lossarnach axemen, and the Rhudaur hillmen. They work similarly to spears in that they can be thrown and then retrieved, allowing the player to throw an axe again and again until either it is lost in the chaos of battle or it breaks. It deals less damage than a spear, but it can be thrown instantly, making it good for a quick knock-the-enemy-off-their-feet attack. However, these have a limited range and are quite difficult to use effectively.

Throwing axes are used by the Dwarves of Erebor and the Iron Hills, and Dwarves of Ered Luin as well as hillmen of Rhudaur, Dunlendings, and Lossarnach axemen. Currently these are the only mobs to fight with throwing axes.

There are currently five variants of the throwing axe: iron, bronze, Dwarven, Blue Dwarven and Lossarnach throwing axes.

The player gains the achievement "Baruk Khazâd!"¹ if they kill a foe with a Dwarven throwing axe. Only hostile NPCs count here, neither passive mobs, nor other players on multiplayer servers.

It is recommended, when using this weapon, to ensure that you've got multiple throwing axes next to one another in your hotbar -- at least three throwing axes, having five or six throwing axes will be even better. This kind of setup can be very good for PvP, as you can theoretically throw up to four axes per second -- in practice, however, the speed of axe throwing is limited by how fast you can switch between hotbar slots.

¹ The Dwarven battlecry on top of the page means "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!"

If the player throws a throwing axe on top of a troll statue, the throwing axe will continually spin around the top of the statue.
